Based on how things are going this year, season 9 of The Rookie promises to be another thrilling season. ABC is finishing its 2025-2026 television season a bit earlier than NBC and CBS, thanks to starting the year early and having fewer breaks for some shows. Now that High Potential season 2 and Abbott Elementary season 5 have finished, it’s The Rookie‘s turn to conclude the season and pave the way for future stories at Mid-Wilshire.
This year, The Rookie kicked off its eighth season with a bold move – filming its premiere episode in Prague. It’s unusual for network television shows to film abroad, and ABC’s willingness to invest in the location highlights their belief in the series. The season continued with a combination of thrilling cases and personal stories for the team at Mid-Wilshire, and some of these storylines will likely shape what happens next on the show.
The Rookie Season 9 Is Officially Confirmed By ABC
When ABC was deciding which shows to continue, it took a while to confirm the future of The Rookie. The show didn’t get renewed for season 9 until April 2026, but that’s good – it avoided being on the verge of cancellation right before the final episode.
Given how well the show has done, it was surprising it took the network so long to officially renew it for the 2026-2027 season. While it doesn’t get huge ratings on live television, it’s very popular on streaming platforms and with younger viewers.
When Will The Rookie Season 9 Release?
If ABC continues with its usual plan, season 9 of The Rookie will likely premiere in mid-season, meaning new episodes will begin airing around January after the holidays. This approach benefits both the network and the show, as it avoids disruptive breaks during the season.
Also, Hawley is developing a spin-off of The Rookie called The Rookie: North with Jay Ellis. If ABC orders it to series, The Rookie season 9’s schedule could be adjusted to make room for the new show.
What The Rookie Season 9’s Story Will Be
Losing Monica was tough, and now that she’s gone, The Rookie really only has two main villains left: Oscar Hutchinson and Liam Glasser. I’m not sure if the show will wrap up their stories in season 9, but honestly, I think it might be a good time for the writers to bring in some fresh faces as antagonists. On a happier note, after a pretty perfect season 8 for them, I’m really excited to see what’s next for Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen – where their relationship and careers will go. I’m hoping for some big developments for them!
If ABC decides to air The Rookie: North, we can expect at least one crossover episode during the season. The event has already been filmed, according to creator Noah Hawley, though details about how it will fit into both shows and when it will air are still unclear. This crossover between The Rookie: North and season nine of The Rookie will create a stronger connection between the two series, beyond just sharing lead characters.
