Following criticism on social media, Kid Cudi has removed M.I.A. from his tour. This decision came after M.I.A. made some controversial statements while performing in Dallas, Texas on May 2nd. The comments and the venue where they were made were particularly unusual.
During her concert, the hip-hop artist shared with the audience, as reported by Rolling Stone, that she’d faced backlash for various reasons, but was surprised to be criticized for being a Republican voter of color. She then announced she wouldn’t be performing her song “Illegal,” suggesting someone in the audience might be undocumented.
The audience reacted badly to what M.I.A. said, and some people accused her of trying to cover up the booing with pre-recorded cheers. Following this, Kid Cudi announced on social media, according to Pitchfork, that M.I.A. would no longer be participating in the tour.
M.I.A. dropped from current Kid Cudi tour
After his recent shows, he received a lot of messages from fans who were bothered by her controversial statements. He was very disappointed by this and stated he won’t allow anyone on his tour to make offensive comments that upset his fans.
M.I.A. reacted to being dropped by her label with a detailed tweet, strongly defending her statements and accusing those questioning her of acting like “the work of Satan.”
I’ve heard the artist say she’s a Republican, and a lot of people seem to jump to the conclusion that means she’s against immigration. But it’s actually a bit more complex than that! She’s not even an American citizen – she’s from England and Sri Lanka, which adds another layer to everything.
Because she isn’t a U.S. citizen, some people don’t believe she can truly be considered an American, and therefore question her right to speak about U.S. immigration policies. Others argue that immigration is a worldwide issue, and anyone can have an opinion on it, regardless of their nationality.
Ultimately, people tend to focus on how things affect their own communities. So, even at a large event like a concert, listeners will connect with a message based on their personal, local experiences.
If you were hesitant about seeing Kid Cudi in concert because M.I.A. was also on the bill, you can now go without that worry. M.I.A. is no longer touring with Kid Cudi, starting Monday.
