According to a statement made by Plaza, Baena, and Stern family (as reported by Variety), this situation is heart-wrenchingly sad and hard to comprehend.

We truly appreciate all the kindness shown to us. At present, we kindly ask for some privacy as we navigate through this phase.

Initially, Baena garnered acclaim when he collaborated on the script for the 2004 comedy “I Heart Huckabees,” a movie featuring Jude Law, Jason Schwartzman, Dustin Hoffman, and Mark Wahlberg in leading roles.

Later, the filmmaker was at the helm for both “Life After Beth” (released in 2014) and “The Little Hours” (from 2017), where Aubrey Plaza featured prominently in both productions. The pair also joined forces on “Spin Me Round” and the 2021 series titled “Cinema Toast”, which represented Aubrey Plaza’s first directorial venture.

In 2011 was when they first began their relationship, and exactly a decade afterward, in the year 2021, they officially got married.

Actor Adam Pally, known for his roles in Baena’s movies such as “The Little Hours” and “Life After Beth,” along with Plaza, has also expressed his tribute to Baena through a post on Instagram.

In his own words, Jeff Baena hailed from Miami and was a kind, Jewish individual. He was known for his collaborative spirit and mentorship, as well as being an energetic basketball player, despite having an unconventional jump shot.

He was an exceptionally skilled director, known for his exceptional vision and knack for connecting people. He was always ahead in identifying opportunities and knew the hidden gems of restaurants, no matter the location.

In summary, Pally expressed his deep sympathy towards Aubrey and the Baena family, as well as to everyone who interacted with him on film sets, at his home, or within his circle.

“Thanks for believing in me Jeff, may your memory be a blessing.”
