Star Trek: Voyager's Kes could return, but is her character really needed?

As a gamer with over two decades of Star Trek fandom under my belt, I must say that Kes’ potential return to the Star Trek universe is a topic that stirs a mix of excitement and skepticism within me. On one hand, Jennifer Lien’s character had an intriguing backstory and unique abilities that could add depth to any future series. However, on the other hand, her previous departure felt rushed, and the subsequent ‘evil Kes’ storyline was a bitter pill to swallow for many fans like myself.

Voyager at the start of its fourth season to make room for Jeri Ryan’s character, Seven of Nine. This change allowed for new storylines about a Borg drone who had been rescued. The producers claimed they had exhausted all possible storylines for Kes, so instead of having her physically leave, she transformed into an ethereal being and departed from Voyager.

Screenrant’s Jen Watson proposes a compelling method for the character of Kes to reappear in the Star Trek universe, and it seems entirely plausible. Her story concluded rather swiftly, and then Voyager introduced the antagonistic version of Kes, which was an unsatisfactory farewell to the character. Thus, perhaps it’s worth considering revisiting Kes again.

As a gamer reflecting on the Star Trek universe, I ponder if it’s wise to reintroduce Kes from Voyager, given her initially weak story arcs. If they were to bring her back, it might serve as a satisfying conclusion after the questionable revival in “Fury.” However, is it essential at this stage? Maybe not. Instead, could we see a transformed version of Kes from the season three episode “Warlord,” where an evil warlord took control of her body? This Kes would certainly stir up trouble for the Federation, providing ample opportunities for engaging storylines.

The question arises as to whether Kes’ potential comeback would truly enhance a Star Trek series or if it would merely cater to fans who adored the character. If she does reappear in any quadrant, there needs to be a compelling reason for her return and a skilled writer to craft a narrative that avoids forcing the character into the series.
