This week’s episode was particularly engaging, and I can’t wait to delve deeper. Here’s our take on episode 3 of “Shrinking” season 2 titled “Psychological Something-ism.” SPOILERS FOLLOW.

Shrinking season 2 episode 3 tests all kinds of friendships (Review and Recap)

It appears that the storyline involving Grace has reached its conclusion. Initially, Jimmy attempted to persuade Donny to dismiss the charges against his wife, but Donny remained uncooperative as usual. Given his history of abuse and numerous felonies, the state opted not to pursue charges due to insufficient evidence. Fantastic news! However, Grace is not rejoicing because she harbors guilt over pushing Donny off a cliff and avoiding punishment for her actions.

Initially, she resolves to return to him. However, my response was a firm “no!” It’s not possible! Fortunately, Brian shares statements from her friends that they had prepared for court, which gave Grace the courage she needed to break free from her abusive husband. With support from her friends and her sister, this final step enabled Grace to finally move on. A sigh of relief escapes me as I was worried she wouldn’t manage to escape him and secure that divorce. In the end, she decides to relocate to Vancouver with her sister.

In summary, things aren’t going well for Jimmy when it comes to friendships. Gaby is still upset with him following their disagreement in season 2 episode 2, and rightfully so. Their common friends have taken her side, and Jimmy isn’t welcome to join their gatherings due to this situation. On top of that, there’s Brian who’s also upset because Jimmy didn’t inform him about his relationship with Gaby.

Initially, Jimmy doesn’t seem overly concerned, but there’s a profound pain hidden in Brian. He feels that their friendship has been fading for quite some time now, and surprisingly, he had developed a stronger bond with Tia before her demise. This fear of losing his friend becomes more palpable to him. At first, Jimmy fails to grasp the situation, and even receives a harsh slap from Brian.

In this situation, despite the gravity of it all, I found myself chuckling uncontrollably. Frankly, I feel compelled to give Jimmy a good shake – or perhaps a gentle nudge would suffice – to help him grasp the logic of things. It’s delightful that Tia, much like going to Brian and Charlie’s place for dinner on Wednesdays, seems to have inspired Jimmy to initiate a new tradition with his friend. To put it positively, at least one friendship has been mended now.

Regarding their friendship, matters are set to grow complex for Sean and Liz. Interestingly enough, Sean’s father happens upon the food truck initially mistaking him as an employee and shows little interest. Upon discovering that Sean owns the food truck, however, he feels a sense of pride – quite the model father figure indeed! I found myself nearly popping my eyes out at this man. What’s more, Liz overhears his dad wistfully mentioning that he had always imagined him and Sean running a business like this together, as he was the one who taught his son to cook.

Liz chooses to give up her stake in the food truck business to Sean’s father, with the intention of fulfilling a shared dream. However, Sean expresses disappointment over this decision. I understand that Liz was trying to help and had good intentions, but honestly… It seems you may have overlooked the fact that Sean’s father is not always supportive. Furthermore, it appears that such a drastic move was made without consulting Sean first.

Which Sean points out. However, his reaction was definitely too dramatic. Look, he’s hurt and lashing out. But his response to all of this was a bit much in my opinion. I know the show wanted to add tension to this friendship. But, I don’t know. It felt like Sean overreacted here.

At last, we arrive at Paul and Alice. Interestingly, the bond between Paul and Julie is growing stronger. He chooses to accompany her to meet her husband, who has dementia. It was a touching gesture, albeit somewhat unsettling. I guess that’s just my perspective. Later, Paul intends to find a new doctor so that Julie can simply be his girlfriend, rather than his caregiver. Alice shares with Paul the letter she penned for the driver who caused her mother’s car accident, and reveals she visited him. He advises her against engaging with him, as she isn’t emotionally prepared yet.

Alice can’t resist the temptation, and she disregards advice. Oh boy, I’m certain she’ll come to regret this action. The inebriated driver attempts to express remorse and means it sincerely, but no matter what he says, it won’t be enough. Just as Paul predicted, at this moment, Alice isn’t prepared to confront him. Instead, she becomes enraged and begins yelling at him in the coffee shop where he works. She accidentally drops a book when storming out.

Here comes the part where I exclaimed “nooo!” at my screen. Despite the pain and fury, it’s evident that Alice needs to experience something. Handily, Conner appears, and she asks him to kiss her. However, I can see that Alice is extremely vulnerable and wounded at this moment, and this situation isn’t going to be beneficial for her or Summer, who is dating Conner. Oh dear!

The third episode of “Shrinking” season 2 delved into the importance of friendships, effectively repairing the bond between Brian and Jimmy, while also highlighting the strong connection between Summer and Alice. However, fresh conflicts have emerged that are likely to escalate in the upcoming episode, notably the Alice and Conner cliffhanger. I found this episode to be quite robust, appreciating the blend of drama and comedy that the series handles so skillfully. Episode rating: B.
