Metal Slug Spawned a Franchise 3 Decades Ago

Originally launched in 1996, the first Metal Slug game takes place in 2028. Players control soldiers Marco Rossi and Tarma Roving as they battle Donald Morden’s Rebel Army in an intense war. The fast-paced, action-packed gameplay quickly became popular in arcades and was later released on home consoles. The game’s success led to numerous sequels and spin-offs, establishing a long-running franchise. Metal Slug also heavily influenced other games, including Demon Front, Alien Hominid, and Mercenary Kings.

The original Metal Slug game spawned six direct sequels, the last of which, Metal Slug 7, came out on the Nintendo DS in 2008. An enhanced version, Metal Slug XX, was later released on PlayStation Portable, Xbox Live Arcade, and PlayStation 4. A remastered version of Metal Slug 2, known as Metal Slug X, first appeared on the Neo Geo MVS in 1999. Most recently, a spin-off title was released in 2024 for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

It’s not yet clear when the Metal Slug reboot will be released.
