10 gory movies guaranteed to make you queasy

As a long-time connoisseur of all things gory and grotesque in the horror genre, I can confidently say that these films have left me both horrified and exhilarated in equal measure. The Terrifier trilogy is undoubtedly a standout, with its over-the-top brutality and absurdity that borders on laughable. Yet, it’s the kind of ridiculous gore that makes you appreciate the craftsmanship behind each gruesome scene.

Recently, “Terrifier 3” made its theater debut over the weekend, sparking a flurry of discussion about its excessive gore. The intense, graphic violence in these films caused some viewers to leave the cinema and even vomit. If you’re like me, you appreciate movies with gore that leaves your mouth agape and yearning for more. The following movies on this list are well-known for their lack of restraint when it comes to horror, steering into the grotesque, depraved brutality these films are famous for. (Rest assured, “A Serbian Film” is not included in this list!)

Terrifier trilogy

To start off our list, let’s begin with the “Terrifier” trilogy, as we’ve just released the latest edition. The “Terrifier” series is rapidly gaining cult status and warrants recognition. The story revolves around the twisted character, Art the Clown, who has an exceptionally high body count. His killings are far from ordinary and are infamous for their extreme brutality and excessive violence.

In simpler terms, the ‘Terrifier’ film series is known for its diverse and extreme violence, ranging from brutal chainsaw murders to questionable bedroom sequences. The level of gore in these movies can sometimes be so excessive that it borders on comical for some viewers. On the other hand, others find the films disappointing due to their inconsistent plotlines, and there are those who take issue with the graphic kill scenes intended to elicit shock.

Evil Dead franchise

Initially released in 1981, “The Evil Dead” stirred up much debate because of its graphic sequences. Undeterred by censorship concerns, director Sam Raimi aimed to create a movie brimming with gore. Despite its contentious debut, the “Evil Dead” series has developed a lasting legacy and still attracts new fans as subsequent films have been reimagined.

2023’s “Evil Dead Rise” has reinvigorated fans with its abundant gore and spine-chilling possessions, though I must confess my preference lies with the 2013 “Evil Dead”, particularly its climactic blood rain scene – quite a spectacle! That said, every movie in this series is worth checking out for their iconic chainsaw kills, buckets of blood, and unparalleled pandemonium. The Necronomicon, or the Book of the Dead, remains a force of destruction, leaving no one immune to its wrath, not even children.

Saw franchise

Another well-liked film, titled “Saw“, gained popularity for its graphic violence. The “Saw” series comprises ten films so far, with more on the horizon. What makes these movies surprisingly successful is that although they’re gruesome, they manage to keep viewers engaged by presenting an intriguing plot.

These movies often have a notorious image due to their elaborate, seemingly impossible traps and unique, unconventional kill methods. Yet, they are undeniably iconic, with their mind-blowing traps becoming more intricate in each installment. The traps provide an entertaining blend of creativity and surprise, offering kills that are both hard to predict and even harder to comprehend until a character meets a gruesome demise.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Everyone’s familiar with, or at least heard of, the iconic horror movie, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” This movie significantly shaped the horror genre and has spawned numerous remakes and spin-offs to keep the tale going. Upon its debut, the film was prohibited in several countries due to its graphic violence.

As a horror enthusiast, I’d say that while “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” might not be the goriest film on this list, it certainly delivers on its unsettling theme. The movie veers more towards the disturbing side, with subtle suggestions of cannibalism and inbreeding. Plus, the chilling image of Leatherface wearing a mask made from human skin is enough to send shivers down anyone’s spine.

The Human Centipede: First Sequence (2009)

I want to express my apologies upfront for including this film on our list, but given its extremely graphic content, I feel it’s necessary. To put it mildly, “The Human Centipede” is incredibly disturbing and gory, making me queasy during my first viewing – something uncommon even among horror movies. In fact, due to its explicitness and grotesque themes, this movie has been prohibited in many countries.

As a gamer, I’ve heard plenty of grumbles about this horror movie, and honestly, I can see why. Yet, for some, it’s a unique thrill that sets it apart from other horror flicks, making even the bravest viewers squirm in their seats. Personally, I think the sequels that followed the original were a letdown, but still, people seem to find enjoyment in them.

More on this list that I would recommend for the gore lovers:

  • Dead Alive (Braindead) (1993)
  • The Green Inferno (2013)
  • Raw (2016)
  • Hostel (2005)
  • Cannibal Holocaust (1980)
