I’m so excited! HBO Max just announced that they’re making Season 2 of the Harry Potter series, and it will be Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets! Even better, they’re telling us about it seven months before the first season—which is coming out at Christmas—even premieres! I can hardly wait.
The seven Harry Potter books were made into eight movies between 2001 and 2011. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the first film, and Warner Bros. is planning a big celebration. With new merchandise, a return to cinemas, and a TV series in development, it’s a fantastic time to be a Harry Potter fan.
HBO’s Harry Potter Will Return for Season 2
The announcement of Season 2 confirms that Warner Bros. and HBO are moving forward with the series, which has already faced some criticism before even airing. However, a brief behind-the-scenes look also showed how enduringly popular the Harry Potter franchise remains, despite all the discussion and debate.
The renewal aligns with the expected filming timeline. Season 1 began production in the UK in July 2025 and is scheduled to finish this month. Sources say they’ve completed filming at Hogwarts, likely capturing the students’ return after the school year ended. Production will pause for a couple of months before starting on Season 2 again this fall.
In April 2023, Warner Bros. announced a television series based on the books, promising a more accurate portrayal of the story and a deeper dive into the magical world thanks to the longer format. They also stated the show is planned to run for ten years, providing enough time to film and release all seven seasons. This renewal news follows confirmation from HBO’s Casey Bloys over a month ago.
Harry Potter Season 2 Will Have a Major Shakeup
Jon Brown, a writer on the first season, has been promoted to co-showrunner for Season 2. He’ll work alongside showrunner Francesca Gardiner, who explained that adding a co-showrunner is essential to keep production moving smoothly as they finish Season 1 by Christmas and begin Season 2 this fall.
Gardiner shared his appreciation for working with Jon, starting with their time on Succession and continuing on Harry Potter. He praised Jon’s writing skills, his ability to collaborate, and his kind personality, calling him a valuable asset. Mark Mylod, who also worked on Succession, is joining the series as a director and executive producer.
The first season, called Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (released as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the U.S.), introduces Harry Potter as he learns on his eleventh birthday that he’s a wizard and has been accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This discovery launches him into a world full of exciting adventures and serious threats.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone premieres on Christmas on HBO Max.
