Mr.’s New Museum Show Is All About Otaku Fantasy

Summary

  • Japanese Superflat artist Mr. opens We’ll Meet Again, his first major museum solo in Japan, at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum
  • On view through June 21, the exhibition features over 80 new and beloved artworks, spanning painting, installation, video and sculpture

I’m so excited about Mr.’s exhibition, We’ll Meet Again, at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum! It’s running all the way until June 21, 2026, which is amazing. The show really gets into his unique style – it’s a cool mix of playful chaos and a lot of things I love, like nostalgia, video games, and manga. Plus, it’s cool to see how he’s influenced by the yanki subculture – it gives his art a really rebellious edge!

After more than ten years, this is the artist’s first solo show in his home country. It features over 80 pieces – paintings, sculptures, installations, and videos – all showcasing his unique style of ‘Japanese Pop’ art and creating a fully immersive experience for viewers.

Highlights include a remarkably detailed recreation of a messy bedroom, complete with beer cans, manga, old TVs, and artwork, plus a showing of the artist’s 2008 film, Nobody Dies. Another area focuses on car and motorcycle culture, showcasing a decorated ‘itasha’ car with cat ears, a newly customized motorcycle, and a large sculpture called ‘The Metamorphosis,’ which is being displayed in Japan for the first time.

Mr. rose to prominence in the 1990s and became well-known for his contribution to the Superflat art movement. He uses a vibrant, energetic style to portray the emotional complexities of being a teenager. His work often examines modern consumer culture, especially in Japan, and explores the contrast between cute, appealing aesthetics and the feelings of loneliness that can come with living in a digital world, while also suggesting ways to overcome that isolation.

I’m so excited to share the address for the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum! It’s located on the 7th and 8th floors of the Riverain Center Building, at 3-1 Shimokawabata-machi, Hakata-ku in Fukuoka City, Japan. If you’re ever in the area, you absolutely have to check it out!
