Be warned, this article contains spoilers from the final episode of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. The season 2 finale of Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again features a major reveal that significantly alters the hero’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Charlie Cox having first portrayed Matt Murdock in the original Netflix Defenders series, Daredevil now has one of the longest histories of any Marvel hero within the shared universe.
When the original Daredevil TV show ended, it was the first of those street-level heroes to rejoin the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it was fully incorporated into the ongoing story. Since then, Daredevil has teamed up with characters like Spider-Man, She-Hulk, Echo, and Swordsman, among others.
We’ve seen this happen in various Marvel Cinematic Universe TV shows and movies, including Daredevil: Born Again. The first season of the Disney+ series was reworked to match the darker feel of the original Netflix show. Now, after a thrilling conclusion to its second season, Daredevil’s secret identity has remained protected throughout his entire story in the Marvel Universe.
Things have changed. For a long time, only Kingpin, Daredevil’s main enemy, knew Matt Murdock was Daredevil. But in the season finale of Daredevil: Born Again, Matt publicly revealed his secret identity in court. He did this to protect Karen Page and to make sure Wilson Fisk would be held accountable. This is a huge development.
Daredevil’s Life In The MCU Will Never Be The Same
Matt’s actions have had significant repercussions. He can’t return to his former life because people now know his secret: despite being a blind lawyer, he’s incredibly capable and operates as the vigilante Daredevil, possessing a unique way of perceiving the world. Furthermore, he must face the consequences of his actions as Daredevil at the conclusion of season 2.
Over the course of both seasons of Daredevil: Born Again, viewers watched Matt Murdock deal with the loss of his friend Foggy Nelson, eventually heal, and move on. He even reached a point where he saved Bullseye’s life, giving him a chance to make amends. By the end of season two, Matt had found peace with his decisions and his life. But just as he was about to enjoy that peace with Karen, he was arrested and taken to prison.
As Daredevil: Born Again season 3 begins, things are different for both the show and Matt Murdock within the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Even after Matt gets out of prison, he’ll find the world has changed significantly. This is a big shift for a character audiences have followed since 2015, who has always acted in a predictable manner.
Marvel Is Ready To Adapt A Major Daredevil Comics’ Arc
Now that season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again has concluded with Matt Murdock’s imprisonment, the show is gearing up to follow the storyline from the Marvel comic, “The Devil in Cell Block D.” This arc focuses on Matt navigating the dangerous and complicated dynamics of prison life, where many inmates were previously put behind bars by Daredevil himself, and his identity is known. This sets the stage for a very tense and dramatic third season.
Okay, so the rumors were true – we saw Matt Murdock bumping into agents from the Anti-Vigilante Task Force as he was being taken away, which definitely hinted at something bigger. And while Matt was locked up, it looks like Iron Fist was secretly filling in as Daredevil, patrolling the city. We actually saw Finn Jones (Iron Fist) and Mike Colter (Luke Cage) on set during season 3 filming – and Colter just reappeared in the finale of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 – so I’m guessing we’ll see those characters play a role. Plus, in the comics, Foggy Nelson is revealed to be alive and in witness protection, and honestly, I’m really hoping the MCU goes that route with his story too.
