As a long-time fan of The Walking Dead, I must say that this season has been nothing short of exhilarating! Each episode seems to outdo the last, and season 2 is no exception.

In the third episode of Season 2 of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon,” the trio comprising Daryl, Isabelle, and Fallou strive to rescue Laurent from imminent peril. Meanwhile, Carol delves deeper into uncovering secrets about Genet and her influence within the living military group known as Pouvoir. Will Carol be able to locate Daryl?

Will Laurent be saved? Let’s find out!

Rescuing Laurent

The story kicks off with Sylvie being taken captive by Laurent, who keeps her confined until his experiment is finished. However, she manages to break free and attempts to alert others about Laurent’s imminent demise. Regrettably, her attempt to save others ends tragically when she falls from a great height and meets her end.

While Daryl, Isabelle, and Fallou sneak into The Nest unnoticed, coincidentally at the same time that Laurent is led out for public viewing, Laurent remains oblivious to the fact that Losang had laced his tea, which makes him drowsy and barely responsive when Sylvie, a walker, attempts to bite him as part of a test to confirm his immunity.

In a turn of events, Daryl ends up slaying Sylvie. Simultaneously, Isabelle and Fallou succeed in rescuing Laurent. They decide to congregate at the cave where Daryl had been training Laurent, but it doesn’t take much time for Daryl to be apprehended (following a prolonged and thrilling battle against numerous Nest soldiers). Isabelle becomes separated from Fallou and Laurent who successfully reach the cave. Now in captivity, Daryl is subjected to interrogations and beatings, but he remains firm and refuses to cooperate.

After being imprisoned alongside Isabelle, I find myself longing for the freedom of our firefly-lit homeland. As days pass, I share stories about the warmth and camaraderie found there among friends and family. It strikes me then, that this place could offer a new life for both Isabelle and Laurent. I confess that I’ve discovered something worth fighting for – a desire to protect and provide for them in our shared home. In response, Isabelle reveals her own feelings, expressing her love for me without uttering the same three words (as far as I know).

In this rephrased version: After departing from Daryl, Losang goes to converse with Isabelle. Eager to disclose Laurent’s whereabouts in an attempt to save Isabelle, Daryl is prepared, but Losang appears unconcerned.

The story opens by delving into Marion Genet’s past. She was a hardworking but underacknowledged janitor at the Louvre Museum in Paris. One of her colleagues persuades her to attend a gathering where all custodians were planning a strike. Suddenly, their phones ring out synchronously. Unbeknownst to them, this was the start of an apocalypse.

As a gamer immersed in a historical simulation, I – or rather, Genet’s virtual counterpart – found myself at the entrance of the Louvre, attempting to gain access with my husband. However, we were met by an unyielding line of security personnel who barred our way, neither letting anyone inside nor allowing those outside to enter. The museum was effectively a sealed fortress.

In a later scene, Genet finds herself face-to-face with a pane of glass separating her from her husband, who is gruesomely attacked by a walker. Fast forwarding to the current scenario, Genet has secretly stolen the original Mona Lisa painting. For the first time, she encounters Carol while both are admiring the artwork. Carol notices the authority Genet wields over her followers and empathizes with her as someone who was once overlooked, just like herself.

What horrifies Carol and her French friend is the fact several people are captured just to be killed and used for Genet’s ongoing walker experiment. Carol gets assigned kitchen duty and uses the time to ask if anyone knows Daryl.

Through these events, she encounters Codron, who reveals the location of the person once she begs and falsely claims Daryl is her sibling. She divulges this information to her French companion, who insists on staying because her spouse is yet present in the location.

That night, I attempted to flee on horseback, but as expected, Genet and her group were there, all thanks to my French friend’s deceit for the sake of his husband. In exchange for their assistance, Genet agreed to escort us back to Paris. Once more, Carol and Genet conferred, with Carol spinning another web of lies, professing she was searching for Daryl to eliminate him. Genet fell for it and vowed her aid in helping Carol exact her vengeance.

As they journeyed toward Mont Saint-Michel, the site of The Nest, they encountered the Louvre along the way. At this point, Genet shared some insights into her past with Carol. It appeared that the French government prioritized safeguarding the artwork within the museum over the safety of the people outside who were at risk of being attacked by walkers.

Upon reaching The Nest in the evening, Carol discovers that Genet’s supposed ‘army’ is actually a large number of individuals who Carol has been trained to transform into the aggressive and potent walkers she’s been researching. Genet forces Carol into this group, asserting that she now has the chance to eliminate Daryl.

At this point everyone but our main group are terrible people

It’s a bit of an understatement, but it seems that Pouvoir, who conducts experiments on innocent people, and the Nest, who mercilessly eliminate anyone who challenges them, are both unfortunate outcomes of post-apocalyptic France. Unfortunately, with Daryl having killed most of the Nest’s soldiers, none of them are likely to survive Genet’s attack. On the other hand, Genet’s group continues to attract volunteers, allowing her to expand her army of walkers.

Despite Genet’s past being deeply troubling, it provides some explanation for her present status and her icy, calculating demeanor. It’s equally disheartening that she capitalized on the apocalypse to recount her tale and rise to such power, but all for misguided purposes. Similarly disturbing is the fact that those who venerate God and trust in a higher authority are so effortlessly deceived and controlled by Losang and the Nest. The apocalypse remains as merciless now as it was when it began.

Despite the stark truth, I must admit it’s challenging to fully accept that such limited optimism prevails at present. Surprisingly, even the bleak world of “The Walking Dead” eventually offered a positive resolution for the survivors, with the Commonwealth transforming into a vibrant, flourishing sanctuary. Remarkably, The Hilltop too reclaimed its past splendor.

It seems like Daryl might find Spain more suitable in season 3, given the developments we’ve seen so far. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Laurent is resilient, allowing the world to eventually recover and embark on a fresh start.
