Tom Hanks revealed why Woody is now bald in Toy Story 5, following the debut of the character’s new appearance in the movie’s trailer.
The trailer, which came out earlier this year, features Woody entering Bonnie’s room wearing his usual hat and a new poncho. When he takes them off, the light reveals a bald spot, much to the surprise of the other toys.
Tom Hanks, the voice of Woody, told Entertainment Weekly that the character has been ‘played with’ so much he’s starting to show wear and tear.

Hanks explained that if you repeatedly put a rubber hat on a rubber head, it’s bound to cause some rubbing and irritation. He mentioned that the character he plays has developed a sore spot on the back of his head as a result.
In Toy Story 4, Woody chose to leave his friends and join Bo Peep on her adventures as a ‘lost toy’. However, he’s coming back in the newest movie after Jessie reaches out with an important message.

Okay, so Bonnie gets this new tablet, Lilypad, and it’s seriously stealing all her attention! As a fan, it’s heartbreaking to see her not playing with Woody and the gang as much. They’re really worried and turn to Woody to figure out how to win Bonnie back. It’s a tough spot for everyone!
Woody, in addition to his receding hairline, seems to have a bit of a belly. Tom Hanks explained this is intentional, reflecting the materials the character is constructed from.
Hanks explained that the puppet isn’t made of plastic. Instead, it’s filled with stuffing and covered in cloth, which naturally compresses and changes shape over the years.
I was really glad to hear director Andrew Stanton talk about Toy Story 5 last year. He explained that Pixar only decided to make another film because the first three movies are still so beloved and hold up really well – which, honestly, I totally agree with! It’s good to know they weren’t just making it for the sake of it.

“Toy Story 3 felt like the natural conclusion to Andy’s story,” Stanton said. “No one is losing out on a complete story – they can enjoy those three films and stop there if they wish. But I’ve always appreciated that this world lets us explore the passage of time and how things change. It doesn’t stay frozen in one moment.”
He explained the choice of a tablet as the villain wasn’t about a typical fight, but rather highlighting a bigger issue: that children aren’t playing with traditional toys as much anymore.
Technology has transformed how we all live, and we’re starting to consider what that impact is – both for ourselves and for our children. Simply blaming technology for problems isn’t a helpful solution.
Toy Story 5 is released in cinemas on 19 June.
