MEEK, the singer previously known as Georgia Meek, is one of several British artists who gained exposure in the US thanks to Saturday Night Live UK. While the show itself has been solid, the musicians featured on it have been consistently outstanding.
I’ve been seeing so many amazing bands lately – Wet Leg and Wolf Alice were fantastic, but honestly, I think MEEK just topped them all. They were incredible!
The singer-songwriter performed two popular, recent songs. The first, “Fabulous,” came out in January. The second, “Beautiful Freeks,” hasn’t been officially released yet. This SNL UK appearance follows a string of successful live performances for the artist.
MEEK is pure perfection on Saturday Night Live UK
“Fabulous”
This song highlights MEEK’s signature style: energetic, exciting music paired with lyrics that explore personal struggles, often with a surprising and ironic turn.
The song starts with a bold statement – “I just got my heart broken, but I look fabulous.” This confident theme continues throughout the entire track, which is a good thing! However, it’s not a simple song. The music playfully bends expectations, and MEEK’s singing style shifts dramatically, sometimes sounding like the powerful vocals of Freddie Mercury and other times like the clean, precise tone of Celine Dion.
MEEK’s music is enjoyable and surprisingly complex for its simple backing, and with a striking, consistent use of red in her presentation, she clearly establishes herself as a top-tier vocalist.
“Beautiful Freeks”
Okay, this track is seriously amazing – even better than the first one, I think! It starts off pretty chill and soulful, which totally throws you for a loop because what comes next is just… incredible. It’s really powerful stuff, and it hit me hard. Just a heads-up though, that ‘na na na’ part? Prepare for it to be stuck on repeat in your brain for days. Honestly, I don’t even mind – it’s a good earworm!
The song highlights the singer’s occasional, deliberately affected upper-class tone, and it’s executed skillfully. While we don’t see the audience, it’s hard to imagine anyone being able to stay seated – this track practically demands you get up and dance!
It’s unclear what MEEK’s future holds beyond continuing to perform live. She recently signed with BMG, but hasn’t released a full studio album yet. Many fans, new and old, are eagerly awaiting her debut album, and it seems like it’s on the horizon.
