Citadel: Diana season 1, episode 5 recap and review: "Attack"

As a long-time fan of espionage thrillers, I must say that the penultimate episode of Citadel: Diana was nothing short of exhilarating! The way they managed to intertwine the present and past timelines has kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the season.

The fifth episode of Citadel: Diana, being the second last one in season 1, was bound to be a significant one. It includes an assault, but what happens in the conclusion remains to be seen?

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Citadel: Diana season 1, episode 5.

The scene begins with Edo delivering a fervent address to his Manticore operatives, who are en route to France. He emphasizes that Diana is collaborating with them for the purpose of infiltration within France. For their desired result to materialize, they must all pool their efforts.

It’s a reminder of strong leadership. Edo has the skills needed to take over Manticore. He just can’t get past his father. It’s not like he’d be able to take Manticore in the direction he wants to right now, anyway. Manticore France and Germany both want to control people, so Edo needs to take them down.

Getting to see the Manticore attack on Citadel in Citadel: Diana season 1, episode 5

The narrative persists with its dual timeline structure, established since the outset. In one sequence, we delve into the past, where we witness the assault on Citadel Italy. Here, Diana is involved, and although she’s loyal to those around her, she grapples with the possibility that she might be compelled to take lives.

Indeed, it’s the incident we’re referring to as the failed assault, a tragedy that took the life of Enrico and significantly intensified the animosity between Manticore and Citadel in Italy.

Inside the central system, Diana encounters an agent from Citadel, busily dismantling a weapon. Together, they manage to complete the task, and it is revealed that Diana was the one who took Enrico’s life. This fact has long been concealed by her, and now it becomes clear why she felt such remorse upon seeing the Citadel agent imprisoned—he had never betrayed her secret.

Diana plays the triple agent role well

At certain points during the episode, it was unclear which faction Diana might ultimately align herself with. Was there a possibility that she could collaborate with Cecile in the end? This could only be plausible if Diana carefully assessed her options to ensure her ultimate goal: a permanent escape from Manticore.

Nevertheless, the blossoming emotions towards Edo have made the situation intricate. It’s understandable why her health issues are becoming more frequent. Her feelings for Edo seem to clash with what she truly desires, causing her to second-guess her allegiance to Citadel.

It appears as though Diana’s actions align with the larger strategy of Manticore Italy. She informs Cecile that the Zanis are laying a trap to seize control of Manticore France, which results in Edo being apprehended at the airfield – an event that Italy seems to have orchestrated. This arrest sets the stage for Edo to employ his concealed weapon, enabling him to rescue Diana from the French prison.

As a gamer, I can’t help but sense a lingering doubt about Diana in my heart. After all she’s done against Manticore, it’s only normal for me to wonder if she’s truly on our side. Nevertheless, we push forward with the Italy plan. We successfully secure weapons from the Manufacturing Plant, and it pays off, cornering Cecile in her office and leaving her powerless.

In simpler terms, Edo and Diana managed to obtain the genuine French portion of the weapon. The scheme devised by Manticore Italy appears to have succeeded. This has compelled the other party to make a move towards control, leaving us wondering about the remainder of the plot.

Edo begs Diana to stay with Manticore in Citadel: Diana

Deep down, Diana identifies strongly with Citadel’s values. She finds it hard to align herself with Manticore’s philosophy. However, what connects her to Edo is the shared belief that they might not embrace Manticore’s ethos either. Things are shifting, though. Edo has consented to govern Manticore Italy alongside Ettore, which implies adopting some of Manticore’s practices. The history between them has made Diana dislike Manticore even more, but her feelings for Edo are causing her to reconsider her stance.

Edo fulfills his commitment. He sends her the money and alters her identity details, enabling her to flee and embark on a fresh chapter in life. Yet, he desires her presence. He yearns for her companionship, and it’s evident that she feels the same way. She craves the pure, idealistic image of him that she has grown accustomed to.

This installment delves further into the themes of fidelity and credence, keeping viewers on their toes with its unpredictability, which is one of the show’s strengths. Unlike typical spy dramas where we might anticipate Diana acting against her long-held beliefs after nine years, she remains consistent with the character we’ve grown to appreciate here. Yet, could Diana remain if there were a means to eliminate Ettore and let Edo steer Manticore’s destiny? This question arises.

As a gamer, I can’t wait to see how my character, Edo, reacts when he discovers Diana was secretly a Citadel agent embedded within Manticore. It’s something we players have been speculating about, wondering if anyone else knew or suspected her true allegiance. It adds an intriguing layer to the story since Citadel has been gone for eight years now. It’s refreshing that the series hasn’t been bogged down by endless speculation about who might be a spy and who isn’t. Instead, we get to focus on the unfolding plot and the interactions between characters.

I too ponder how long it might take for Edo to realize that Diana was the one who killed Enrico. His final conversation with his brother still weighs heavily on him, and this isn’t something he can easily move past, given their history. This recent event seems to have introduced a complex dimension to their relationship that I struggle to envision being resolved.

In this latest gaming adventure, the strategic moves and flawless execution had me hooked. Creeping around undetected alongside Matteo and his squad through the hi-tech facility was a thrill. There’s something refreshing about their stealthy approach amidst all Edo’s advanced gadgetry, demonstrating that teamwork still reigns supreme in victory.

Citadel: Diana is available to stream on Prime Video.
