In the upcoming 23rd season of NCIS, Dr. Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) struggles with a bad habit while the team investigates the theft of a groundbreaking technology developed by forensic scientist Kasie Hines (Diona Reasonover). The episode, titled “Bad Impressions,” picks up right after the events of the previous episode, where Kasie’s invention, Edna, was stolen.
Edna is a software program that Hines has been working on since her college days at John Hamilton University. Following the death of NCIS Director Leon Vance, Sam Hanna (LL Cool J), who will lead the new series NCIS: New York, comes to Hines’ aid when Edna is stolen during a computer restart, offering crucial assistance.
Jimmy Palmer Isn’t Happy For Kasie Hines In NCIS Season 23, Episode 19
Jimmy Palmer, the medical examiner for NCIS, isn’t as immediately welcoming to Kasie as others have been. Jimmy has worked on the show for a long time, initially assisting Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard. He’s seen many team members come and go, but Kasie, who joined in Season 19, has quickly become a close friend to him.
Jimmy tends to dwell on the past, a pattern that continues now. When his former girlfriend, Jessica Knight, visits the autopsy to see how things are going, they talk about what they’ve learned. The MCRT recently discovered that Hines was about to sell Edna to a promising tech company called Alveron Tech.
Jimmy’s frustrated that Kasie didn’t share information about Edna with him, and Knight checks if he’s genuinely happy for his friend. Jimmy insists he is, but then worries that if Kasie’s fingerprint software is successful, she might get a new job and leave NCIS. His reaction, while sincere, is mostly focused on how this affects him.
Jimmy has faced a lot of hardship recently, including the loss of his wife, Breena Palmer (played by Michelle Pierce), to COVID-19 during Season 18 of NCIS. However, his difficulty embracing change and supporting those around him is straining his relationships, most notably leading to his breakup with Jessica Knight.
Jimmy’s Worst Trait Is Driving His NCIS Story
I’ve noticed something interesting about the characters lately. While Sam Hanna is really pushing Jimmy to grow, Palmer seems stuck – he can’t quite bring himself to be happy for others when things are going well, and always seems to need things to stay comfortable. It’s understandable to resist change, but Jimmy’s always the one holding back when it comes to celebrating good news. We saw it with Ducky leaving, then with Bishop and Knight – he just can’t seem to fully embrace the moment and be happy for them.
Jimmy has always struggled when people he cares about leave NCIS, even long after they’ve moved on. While it’s normal for people to move forward in life – NCIS is like a family, after all – Jimmy finds it hard to let go, even when it’s for a happy reason, like Ducky’s decision to retire and travel.
Jimmy’s difficulty with change is a recurring theme in his story on NCIS. We see this, for example, when Knight thinks about leaving at the end of Season 21. He wants to feel in control, especially because so much in his life has already changed due to people entering and leaving.
Jimmy needs to take charge of his life and become more responsible for his own happiness. His plan to climb Kilimanjaro, which he shares with Sam and Parker, might be the catalyst for positive change. Hopefully, this challenge will help him grow as a person and finally address some long-overdue personal development.
