The Stars of Industry On That Major Episode 6 Twist
As an actress who has delved deep into portraying complex characters, I can only imagine the emotional turmoil Myha’la Herrold must have experienced while playing Yasmin in “P-Valley.” The revelation that Yasmin had let her father die without help adds a layer of complexity to her character that is both heartbreaking and intriguing.
This story contains spoilers for Industry through Season 3, Episode 6.
The world of business has taken a more ominous turn. After two intense seasons filled with shocking trades and underhanded office politics, Season 3 marks a significant change – it’s not just a shift in mood, but a transformation into an entirely new genre. This season revolves around the enigma surrounding Yasmin’s missing publishing tycoon father. In Episode 6, viewers were finally given the long-awaited answers to this mystery. In a conversation with TIME magazine, stars Marisa Abela and Myha’la dissected the episode and discussed the implications of this game-changing revelation for the show’s future.
The new season kicks off with Yasmin (Abela) and Harper (Myha’la) celebrating aboard Yasmin’s dad’s yacht near Mallorca. As the series progresses, there are rumors in the media that her father, suspected of embezzling funds from the British aristocracy, may have fled or even ended his life on this vessel.
Throughout the initial episodes, brief scenes from the past are interspersed which show that Yasmin discovered her father being unfaithful with a pregnant woman on their boat. In a later argument over his harmful behavior towards women, Yasmin’s father violently pins her down, strangles her, and splashes wine in her face. Their dialogue suggests that he may have sexually abused Yasmin as a child or consistently objectified her throughout her life.
In Episode 6, the full conversation between Yasmin and her father unfolds on the boat’s deck. The argument between them escalates, with Yasmin angrily saying to him, “I fervently hope for your demise.
“Maybe I will,” he responds and climbs to the edge of the boat.
She tells him to proceed, at which point he leaps. He subsequently requests her to notify someone to reverse the boat, but she remains motionless. By the time she snaps out of her stupor, it’s already too late. She eventually tries to release the life jacket from its restraints on the boat, but then notices that he has vanished beneath the water.
Abela told TIME, “I believe she didn’t actively decide to let him perish, but rather wasn’t prepared to make a choice to save him at that particular time.
In a startling turn of events, Harper discovers Yasmin in a state of shock within her room. Upon seeing this, Yasmin shares the details of what transpired. With swift action, Harper invents an excuse and restores the life preserver to its designated spot on the boat. This encounter significantly shaped the characters’ dynamics for the remainder of the season, as Myha’la explains. “They’ve experienced a catastrophic event that has created an unbreakable bond,” she says. “Any lingering resentments or grudges no longer matter because they’ve faced this challenge together.
Abela and Myha’la deliberated over the emotions portrayed by their characters at that instant, as well as a potential grim twist for the series.
TIME: How did you feel when you read what happened on the boat in Episode 6?
Abela: We didn’t get Episode 6 for a very long time.
Myha’la: We didn’t know what happened.
Abela: I requested that Mickey and Konrad inform me about the whereabouts of her father, as this knowledge impacts my acting decisions significantly. Since the viewers are unaware, I can’t casually announce his death to everyone on set. However, I need to be well-informed about everything Yasmin knows to ensure a convincing performance.
Upon hearing that, I exclaimed something like, “Wow, really!” The scene seemed almost alien compared to what we were used to in this series.
What is Yasmin thinking in that moment?
In that instant, there’s such a surge of adrenaline coursing through her bloodstream that it seems she’s not even contemplating. I don’t believe she consciously decides to let him perish. Instead, I suspect she’s hesitant to make the choice to rescue him in that very moment.
Her inability to act stemmed from the strong influence of that decision, leaving her immobile. By the moment she recognizes the action required, it’s almost past due, and swiftly comes the feeling of guilt.
It’s unlikely that she would ever tell anyone, ‘My dad fell off the ship,’ so soon. Even if he managed to stay afloat for a while, it’s been too long since they were last together due to her father’s prolonged emotional abuse. I don’t believe she has the strength within herself to rescue him.
How did that revelation affect the way you played the character on the show?
Yasmin is grappling with a significant, everyday challenge due to her lack of funds and inadequate safety, exacerbated by media attention. She feels extremely exposed, both physically, emotionally, and mentally, given the events on the boat. She’s constantly on edge, living in a state of fear or escape, and this season has left her in a state of anxiety and panic.
Why do you think she confides in Harper?
It’s highly unlikely that she would keep such a heavy secret all by herself. The stress would have been overwhelming for her. Perhaps, in her innocence, she desires to distribute the weight of this secret with someone. I believe deep within her consciousness, she understands that Harper wouldn’t betray her by informing the police. Instead, she might respond with something like, ‘This is a mess and you’re partially involved, and I’m not getting involved.’ However, she won’t exploit her situation.
I believe Harper’s reaction exceeded Yasmin’s expectations, and it marked a significant shift in their relationship for Yasmin. In her mind, she thought, ‘This girl is an exceptional friend, the only one I truly trust in this world.’
Is it a genuine moment of empathy or is Harper storing this information away to use as leverage later?
In that poignant moment, I could see the empathy in Harper’s eyes, a testament to her understanding of Yasmin’s plight. She seemed to say, “I’m deeply sorry for what you’ve been through. You seem to be in need, and I value our friendship too much to stand by idly. That man, he doesn’t deserve you.
From what it seems, Harper believes justice is being upheld since she’s planning to assist the girl. It wasn’t that she killed him, but rather, she didn’t arrange for the boat to come. The affection and concern present in their relationship were genuine because Harper recognized that Yasmin was struggling. If Yasmin had reacted like, ‘I’m relieved he’s gone,’ then Harper might find her actions questionable, perhaps even calling her crazy.
That to me was a genuine moment for both of them.
How does it affect Harper and Yasmin’s relationship?
The bond between them seemed incomplete before, but they were undeniably friends with deep affection for each other. However, when we encounter them again in Season 3, they’ve experienced a shared catastrophe that has profoundly affected their relationship. This event has made all previous grudges and resentments insignificant because it has brought them closer together than ever before.
So we’re tight like we never have been before. But is that enough?
