WWE needs to put its tag titles in real feuds
As someone who has spent countless hours watching wrestling and analyzing its intricacies, I can’t help but feel disheartened by the treatment of the tag team division in WWE. It’s like watching a masterpiece hidden behind a dusty glass case, never given the chance to shine.
There’s been plenty of criticism regarding the handling of the tag team division on both Monday Night Raw and SmackDown by WWE. Despite having a rich roster of talented duos who could capture and defend the titles, these belts seem to be overlooked. This is evident as the WWE Tag Team Championship and the WWE World Tag Team Championship often take a back seat in major feuds. It would be more fitting if they had their own storylines to shine independently.
At the moment, Tama Tonga and Jacob Fatu hold the WWE Tag Team Title on SmackDown, while Finn Balor and JD McDonagh have the WWE World Tag Team Championship on Raw. Both teams are impressive with individuals who can shine as solo superstars. However, their title reigns play a secondary role to the larger storylines driving the shows.
Fatu and Tonga, along with McDonagh and Balor, have something in common: neither team has defended their championship since they initially won it. This inconsistency is a letdown for the entire division, similar to the criticism that Brock Lesnar’s absence as champion devalued other wrestlers’ efforts during his reign. The same argument applies to the tag team division when champions appear on the show but are not scheduled to defend their titles.
Ponder over the possible scenarios unfolding on both shows. It seems DIY might be embroiled in a conflict with teams like Pretty Deadly or LWO. Awesome Truth may have passed the titles to another team prior to losing them again to The Judgment Day, which makes their significant win at WrestleMania 40 less impactful.
For a while, WWE has given less attention to its tag team division compared to other aspects, often using it as a stepping stone for upcoming individual performers. With whispers that Motor City Machine Guns and Lucha Brothers might join WWE soon, there’s a chance their fans may need to adjust their expectations about where they’ll be placed on the roster due to how this company traditionally handles tag teams. This trend seems increasingly likely as time passes.
Discussions have been abundant concerning the management of tag team divisions within wrestling, particularly in WWE. For a while now, they’ve opted to grapple with these issues themselves. At present, there’s a major concern that both title sets are essentially decorative elements for storylines that don’t necessitate them. There are numerous gifted teams out there who could excel in these roles if only granted the chance to make their mark.
