While filming Christopher Nolan’s latest movie, The Odyssey, John Leguizamo endured long filming days, even at the cost of his own comfort and well-being.
The 66-year-old actor described playing the character of Eumaeus, a blind servant in the film. To get into the role, he wore contacts that blurred his vision.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, he described being unable to see for up to fourteen hours each day. He explained that this meant he couldn’t even do simple things like look at his phone, read, or make calls.
Leguizamo said he even needed assistance doing ordinary things like eating and relieving himself.
He explained that he needed constant help with even basic tasks like going to the bathroom and eating. When he was left alone, he retreated into his own thoughts, as that was his only source of comfort.
He then joked, ‘Too much time with my own thoughts… it’s a dangerous thing.’
The actor recently shared with People magazine that he leans towards a “method” acting style – meaning he fully immerses himself in the role and becomes the character, instead of simply pretending to be them.
He described a strange experience where he had a fever dream while playing his character, Eumaeus. He got so immersed in the role – he’s a method actor – that he started to lose track of reality. Christopher Nolan noticed he was shivering because they were wearing very little clothing in the cold February weather.
Leguizamo said the sympathetic director ‘took off his coat and put it on me.’

He went on to say that little things—like seeing someone snacking on chips out of view of the camera—always serve as reminders of a particular feeling or situation.
The goal is to be present and react naturally, focusing on what’s happening right now rather than getting caught up in the constructed environment for the actors. Staying in the moment is key.
And Nolan corroborated Pattinson’s claim about hiking up a mountain.
He explained that when Pattinson began working on the film, they were filming on a mountaintop a thousand feet high with no access road yet in place.

Filming for The Odyssey took place in six different countries and required over 2 million feet of IMAX 70mm film, resulting in a three-hour-long movie.
