Although the third season of the popular Disney+ series The Mandalorian concluded in 2023, it wasn’t truly finished. The subsequent shows Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew set the stage for a new movie continuing Din Djarin and Grogu’s story – essentially acting as a direct sequel to the original series.
However, a new installment has just been released – on July 22, 2026 – that actually takes place before the events of The Mandalorian & Grogu. This story bridges the gap between season 3 of The Mandalorian and the new movie, following Din Djarin and Grogu on another adventure.
Throughout its story, Grogu grows into a skilled warrior with help from his mentor, and together they overcome dangerous challenges. While The Mandalorian and Grogu: Danger in the Dark is mainly intended as a lead-in to the upcoming movie, it also functions like a fourth season of the TV series.
If The Mandalorian comes back with a new season on Disney+, it will likely begin where this story leaves off. Danger in the Dark is the very first comic book to feature Din Djarin as its main character, and also marks Grogu’s debut in any Star Wars comic. This release is especially exciting for fans of The Mandalorian universe.
Danger In The Dark Is Set After The Mandalorian Season 3 But Before The Movie
The comic Danger in the Dark is set after Din Djarin establishes a home on Nevarro, as seen in the season 3 finale of The Mandalorian, but before the events of Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu. This explains why the story unfolds on the planet where he’s decided to stay.
I’m really excited about where Din Djarin and Grogu are headed, but this latest adventure isn’t about their work with the New Republic just yet. Instead, this story, Danger in the Dark, sees them dealing with a more local problem. They’re down on Nevarro, exploring these creepy lava tubes, trying to prevent a crashed pirate ship from destroying the planet. It’s a smaller-scale mission, but still super engaging!
The main characters rely on friendly engineers from Anzella for assistance, but they’re the ones who ultimately have to protect Nevarro. The danger isn’t limited to just the downed spaceship; Din Djarin and Grogu also face dangerous reptilian creatures – known as reptavians – whose venomous bites are often fatal.
Reptavians make their homes in the shadowy, rocky areas near lava tube entrances. As seen on the comic’s cover, Din Djarin and Grogu will also encounter Nevarro’s fire rats – creatures that live inside the tubes but aren’t usually dangerous.
Delilah S. Dawson, known for her work on Star Wars Adventures comics and the Star Wars: Forces of Destiny web series, wrote The Mandalorian and Grogu: Danger in the Dark. Mario del Pennino and Arianna Florean created the artwork for this one-shot comic, which was published by PaperCutz, an imprint of Mad Cave Studios.
Will The Mandalorian Season 4 Ever Happen?
Although Danger in the Dark shifts the style of The Mandalorian to appeal to younger readers, it strongly suggests there are many more adventures with Din Djarin still to come. In fact, complete story arcs already exist that could be used in future Mandoverse projects, but haven’t been released yet.
Jon Favreau actually had detailed plans completed for season 4 of The Mandalorian before deciding to create a movie spin-off. However, a lot of the story he developed for that potential season wasn’t used in The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Considering The Mandalorian is widely considered the best thing Disney has done with Star Wars, and its movie performed decently at the box office, a return of the show on television seems likely eventually. While Disney now focuses more on releasing Star Wars films in theaters, Din Djarin remains popular, which should be an important factor.
