Tig Notaro should have been more than just a cameo character on Star Trek: Discovery

As a long-time Star Trek fan who has been following Tig Notaro’s career since her stand-up days, I couldn’t be more thrilled about her addition to the cast of Starfleet Academy! While I appreciated her brief appearances on Star Trek: Discovery, it felt like we were only scratching the surface of what Commander Reno could bring to the table.

Tig Notaro has just been announced as part of the cast for the upcoming Star Trek spin-off, Starfleet Academy. Previously, she’s been a recurring character on Star Trek: Discovery since its second season. This addition to the cast seems shrewd, and I’m eagerly anticipating that Notaro will have a more substantial role in this new series compared to her limited appearances on Discovery. While she featured in nineteen episodes of the show, many of these instances were brief, with only her debut episode and one from the fourth season offering significant screen time.

Throughout the next four thrilling seasons, I found myself eagerly anticipating Commander Reno’s appearances – her witty remarks and problem-solving skills were always a delight. Despite being a series regular for seasons four and five, her screen time was limited. However, in the fourth season’s one standout episode, she was captured by Tarka, the scientist, which offered a tantalizing glimpse of what could have been for her character. I believe that further exploration of Commander Reno’s role would have significantly enriched Star Trek: Discovery, offering a fascinating and engaging addition to the series.

A gifted comedian like Notaro excelled in her role on Discovery, consistently delivering timely doses of humor that perfectly balanced the series’ more serious tones. Given the show’s darker storylines, an occasional touch of levity would have been beneficial. In the midst of deep and intense narratives, Notaro proved adept at alleviating tension, making her performance a perfect fit for the series.

It would be great if Tig Notaro, joining Starfleet Academy as a series regular, gets more substantial roles in the new drama rather than making brief appearances. While I don’t anticipate Starfleet Academy to mirror the edginess of Discovery, it’s clear that it will still require someone like Tig Notaro to lighten the mood or reduce tension when necessary. After all, she excels at just that.
