Britney Spears is facing misdemeanor charges for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the Ventura County District Attorney’s office announced.
Prosecutors charged the singer of “Toxic” with a misdemeanor DUI on Thursday, alleging she was driving under the influence of both alcohol and drugs. They haven’t revealed which drugs she is suspected of using.
An arraignment is slated for Monday. Spears is not required to appear at the hearing.
The district attorney’s office generally offers a deal, often called a “wet reckless,” to first-time DUI offenders whose cases don’t involve serious factors like a high blood alcohol content, an accident, or any injuries. This deal reduces the charge to reckless driving, but notes that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the incident.
The District Attorney’s office often uses this approach when a defendant takes initiative to deal with the root causes of their behavior, such as by entering rehab or a substance abuse program. Typically, this involves a 12-month probation period, credit for any jail time already served, completion of a DUI education class, and payment of required state fines and fees.

This offer will be extended to Spears on Monday, according to the district attorney’s office.
Last month, singer Britney Spears, 44, was arrested in Westlake Village, California. The California Highway Patrol pulled her over while she was driving a black BMW because they received reports that she was driving recklessly and speeding. She was the only person in the car at the time.
The next morning, she was taken into custody, and a blood sample was collected from her at Los Robles Regional Medical Center, according to a law enforcement official. Authorities also discovered an unidentified substance in her car the night before. The vehicle was searched again the following morning at Roy’s Towing in Thousand Oaks, a source reported to The Times.
