Presumed Innocent adapts the ending of the novel with a major change
As a dedicated gamer and avid reader, I was both excited and skeptical when I heard that Apple TV+ was adapting Scott Turow’s classic legal thriller “Presumed Innocent” into a series. Having read the novel and seen the 1993 film, I thought I knew exactly how the story would unfold. Boy, was I wrong!
In “Presumed Innocent,” the author introduced an unexpected development by having Rusty and Barbara welcome a new addition to their family – a second child. This significant change greatly influenced the novel’s surprising conclusion.

If you’ve read the original “Presumed Innocent” novel or seen the 1990s movie adaptation, you might believe you’re familiar with how the story concludes. Yet, the recently concluded Apple TV+ series brings about significant differences. We were taken aback since the series initiated this shift by introducing Jaden, an unexpected new character who is another child of Rusty and Barbara.
In both the novel and its film adaptation, Rusty and Barbara have just one kid who’s relatively young. Contrastingly, in the Apple TV+ show, they’re raising two kids who are older. The age difference of their offspring plays a significant role in the season finale.
Rusty thinks Barbara killed Carolyn in Presumed Innocent
It came to light that Rusty had restrained Carolyn. He strongly believed that Barbara was responsible, and felt compelled to shield his spouse. Given that she had allegedly taken Carolyn’s life in retaliation for the affair.
In both the novel and the film, it was revealed that Barbara was actually the culprit. This came as a surprise to Rusty, who had been unaware of her involvement. Despite this discovery, he chose not to betray his wife due to the importance of having her around for their young son.
Based on my experience as a crime novel enthusiast and having watched several investigative series, I can say that the latest episode left me utterly surprised. It seemed that Barbara, a character we had grown fond of throughout the season, was not who we thought she was. The revelation came from none other than Jaden, who exposed Barbara’s true nature – she was the one who took Carolyn’s life.
I was not surprised by Jaden’s behavior, as she had hinted at dissociative actions being a possibility due to traumatic experiences. It is now clear that she had recognized what had transpired and was attempting to make sense of it for herself. Unfortunately, many others missed the signs, blinded by their expectations of how the story would unfold based on previous movies and books.
Presumed Innocent Season 2 is happening
As a devoted gamer, I was eagerly anticipating the release of the next installment in this captivating series. I had assumed that, given the structure of the source material, the second season would begin where the second book leaves off – years later. However, it seems that my assumptions were incorrect. The creators have chosen a different path for the narrative, and while this may come as a surprise to some fans, I’m excited to explore the new directions they will take us.
Will the second season be linked to Jaden’s truth bomb?
It’s intriguing that Kyle, Rusty and Barbara’s son, was nearby when Carolyn met her unfortunate end. Was he involved? Had he discovered Rusty’s affair with Carolyn, or perhaps uncovered some other secret of hers? He might have shared this information with Jaden, leading to Jaden’s subsequent actions. These details could surface in the upcoming season.
