The upcoming 2026 Evil Dead reboot was already generating buzz, but the news that Evil Dead Burn will experiment with a new genre makes it even more interesting. Throughout the Evil Dead series, one thing has remained constant: lots of bloodshed. The franchise began in 1981 with Sam Raimi’s debut film, The Evil Dead, which was a dark, shocking, and bleak supernatural horror movie.
The 1987 film Evil Dead II dramatically changed direction, becoming a funny, cartoonish, and deliberately exaggerated sequel. While it had some scary moments, Evil Dead II was as inspired by comedic filmmakers like Tex Avery as it was by horror directors like Dario Argento. Its playful absurdity lessened the fear and suspense of the original. Where Raimi’s first film was a brutal challenge, his second felt more like a slapstick comedy show. The sequel, Army of Darkness, amplified the humor even more, adding a historical action-adventure storyline.
While Army of Darkness felt similar to adventure films like Indiana Jones or the early Mummy movies, the Evil Dead series returned to its horror roots with the 2013 reboot, simply titled Evil Dead. Director Fede Alvarez created an even grimmer and more disturbing film, focusing on college students terrorized in a secluded cabin. The 2023 reboot, Evil Dead Rise, directed by Lee Cronin, offered a fresh take with more humor, but didn’t hold back on the gore.
Evil Dead Burn Is Clearly An Action Horror Movie
I have to say, Lee Cronin really nailed it with Evil Dead Rise. It was genuinely frightening, but also had this great, dark sense of humor, kind of blending the wild gore of Evil Dead II with the truly creepy vibe of the 2013 Evil Dead reboot. What I also loved was moving the story from a remote cabin to a claustrophobic apartment building – a really smart move. Honestly, I thought it would be tough for any sequel to top that, but from what I’ve seen of Sébastien Vaniček’s upcoming Evil Dead Burn, it looks like he’s pulled it off, switching things up again with a new genre twist.
Based on the announcement and the first trailer, Evil Dead Burn appears to be a very action-packed horror film – a new direction for the series. The initial announcement focused on intense fight scenes reminiscent of movies like The Raid or a John Wick film. While the trailer still includes some traditional Evil Dead scares, it also features high-octane chases – by car and boat – Deadites running across rooftops, and even one crawling across a bathroom ceiling.
With Zach Cregger, director of Weapons, co-writing the new Resident Evil movie – and Shay Hatten of the John Wick films also involved – the fact that Evil Dead Burn is now leaning into action horror isn’t entirely surprising. However, this shift in genre, along with the novel’s setting and story, represents a significant gamble for the Evil Dead series. While the franchise has successfully evolved over the years, even with changes in tone, action horror films aren’t usually critical darlings.
Evil Dead Burn’s Genre Shift Is A Major Surprise
While a few action horror films, like the Mummy movies directed by Stephen Sommers, have received positive reviews, the genre generally developed a bad reputation during its peak in the early 2000s. Films like Thirteen Ghosts, Ghosts of Mars, the 2005 version of Doom, House of the Dead, the Underworld series, Van Helsing, Alone in the Dark, Priest, Daywalkers, and even the early Resident Evil movies were largely disliked by critics. Reviewers often pointed out that these movies prioritized flashy action over genuine scares, resulting in films that were loud and spectacular but lacked true horror elements.
Unlike some horror franchises, the Evil Dead series consistently delivers genuinely scary and intense moments. While it’s known for comedic scenes, like Ash fighting his reanimated ex-fiancée, it also features truly disturbing sequences, as seen in Evil Dead Rise. That 2023 film, like the original and its 2013 remake, focused on classic, terrifying home invasion horror. However, the trailer for Evil Dead Burn suggests a different approach, leaning more towards the fast-paced, action-packed style of films like Rec, the 2004 Dawn of the Dead, or From Dusk Til Dawn, with its brutal fight choreography.
Evil Dead Burn’s Big Change Could Be Great News
Action horror films haven’t had much success with critics in the past, so it’s understandable to be skeptical about Evil Dead Burn. But this movie might actually be good! The trailer already shows some truly terrifying moments, like a grinning monster happily eating hot candle wax and a shocking finger injury that’s sure to make audiences squirm.
The series continues to deliver intense horror and gore, prioritizing scares over simple action – a refreshing choice compared to many similar movies. Importantly, the franchise has consistently been successful, even with its shifts in tone and genre. Each installment has taken risks – 2013 became darker and more realistic, 2023 embraced a city setting and over-the-top gore, and Evil Dead II leaned into comedic elements. Despite all these changes, the Evil Dead series remains one of the most consistently praised horror franchises of all time.
Even though Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot leans heavily into action while still being scary, fans shouldn’t worry that this change in style will ruin Evil Dead Burn. In fact, the new movie could actually bring the action horror genre back to life with a story that’s both exciting and frightening. Films like 2004’s Dawn of the Dead and 2007’s Rec have already shown that action and horror can work brilliantly together. Now, Evil Dead Burn has the chance to prove that’s true for the Evil Dead series as well.
