A fantastic horror anthology series that doesn’t get enough credit has returned, and it’s already broken a record on Rotten Tomatoes.
Ridley Scott is an executive producer of The Terror, a series that has changed direction several times. It started by adapting Dan Simmons’ novel of the same name, then moved to an original story for its second season. Season three is based on Victor LaValle’s The Devil in Silver and follows a man wrongly sent to a rundown mental hospital who suspects a sinister force is preying on the other patients.
Before it officially premieres on May 7th, early reviews are in for the third season of The Terror. Currently, with seven reviews counted, the show has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes – a new high for the horror series produced by Ridley Scott.
Victor LaValle is working with Chris Cantwell, known for Halt and Catch Fire, to lead the creative team for season 3 of The Terror. Together, they are the co-creators and showrunners of The Devil in Silver. The new season of this horror anthology boasts a talented cast, including Dan Stevens (from Legion) as the protagonist Pepper, alongside CCH Pounder, Judith Light, Aasif Mandvi, and Chinaza Uche.
The show continues to impress critics, with Season 3 earning a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Previous seasons have also been critically well-received: Season 1, The Terror, has maintained a “Certified Fresh” rating of 94% since its 2018 release, and Season 2, Infamy, scored an 80% “Certified Fresh” rating.
With the premiere of The Terror just days away, people are starting to wonder what a strong start on Rotten Tomatoes will actually mean for the show. Past seasons have usually needed about 50 reviews to get an accurate score, and season 3 currently has fewer than that. As more reviews are published, the show’s initial high score might decrease slightly.
Another key question is how viewers will react to The Terror: The Devil in Silver. It’s become increasingly uncommon for critics and audiences to share the same opinion about horror projects, often leading to significant differences in scores on sites like Rotten Tomatoes. The Terror has experienced this before – while critics generally liked season two, audience approval was more divided, with only a 60% rating.
Most critics seem to agree that The Terror: The Devil in Silver is unsettling and disturbing, while also appreciating its insightful look at psychiatric hospitals. If reviews continue to be generally positive—around 6 to 8 out of 10 stars—the show is likely to keep its perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes and generate excitement for its comeback after seven years.
The new horror series, The Terror: The Devil in Silver, will debut on AMC+ and Shudder on May 7th. New episodes will be released every Thursday.
