The 1980s produced some truly iconic horror-comedies, including classics like An American Werewolf in London and The Lost Boys. This blend of scares and laughs continued with clever films in the 2000s and 2010s, such as Edgar Wright’s Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy and What We Do in the Shadows. Now, that legacy is shining in today’s TV shows, like the new satirical horror series on Apple TV, which currently boasts a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Written by Katie Dippold, who’s known for her work on Parks and Recreation and The Heat, Widow’s Bay is a 10-episode series starring Matthew Rhys (from The Americans) as the main character. The series also features Stephen Root, Charles Van Flaherty, Kylie McNeill, and Olli Haaskivi. Rhys plays Tom Loftis, the mayor of the small coastal town of Widow’s Bay, who is determined to turn it into a popular beach destination. However, the town’s residents, who are quite superstitious and believe in local curses, keep getting in his way.
Widow’s Bay Perfectly Parodies Horror Classics
Horror-comedies often playfully imitate other films, and sometimes these parodies become famous in their own right. Great examples include Scary Movie and Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon.
Similar to classic films like Jaws and The Fog, Widow’s Bay playfully uses familiar horror elements. The story centers around Tom Loftis, who prioritizes the town’s wealth over the safety of its people, even when a century-old curse appears with the ocean fog. With hints of The Twilight Zone and Twin Peaks, Widow’s Bay delivers a quirky and entertaining seaside mystery.
The story is captivating thanks to its eerie atmosphere and strong narrative, even without relying on humor. The unsettling environment immediately establishes the series’ distinctive style, which is especially evident in its clever and witty conversations.
Widow’s Bay Channels Edgar Wright’s Brilliant Blend of Horror and Comedy
Edgar Wright is responsible for some of the best horror comedies of the last quarter-century. He began with the critically acclaimed Shaun of the Dead in 2004, a hilarious take on the zombie genre, and continued with a series of films throughout the 2000s, all starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.
Though the films featured strong stories, impressive horror effects, and great music, it was the sharp, funny dialogue and perfect comedic timing that truly made them stand out and launched Edgar Wright’s career. The writing is remarkably clever, filled with quick, witty conversations, and unexpected jokes and hints at what’s to come, creating a constantly engaging and humorous experience.
The humor in Widow’s Bay feels familiar, which makes sense given the creators’ backgrounds – they’ve all contributed to hit comedies like Parks and Recreation, BoJack Horseman, and Big Mouth. The show’s characters each have distinct, recognizable quirks, helping them stand out despite the relatively small cast, similar to how the characters are developed in Edgar Wright’s Hot Fuzz.
Casting Matthew Rhys, typically known for dramatic roles in shows like The Americans and The Beast in Me, in a comedy is a clever move. It creates an amusing contrast, as if he doesn’t quite belong with the goofy supporting characters. These subtle, thoughtful decisions are what distinguish truly memorable comedies from those quickly forgotten, and Widow’s Bay is already showing the potential to be one of the greats.
Widow’s Bay is available to stream on AppleTV+.
