The 2026 season will introduce the new Condé M. Nast Galleries, a major addition to The Met’s Costume Institute. Designed by Peterson Rich Office, the nearly 12,000-square-foot space, located next to the Great Hall, represents a significant improvement in how the museum showcases fashion. This new, permanent exhibit space is thanks to a generous donation from Condé Nast and highlights The Met’s dedication to recognizing fashion as a respected art form.

The exhibition Costume Art, curated by Andrew Bolton, showcases nearly 400 items representing over 5,000 years of artistic creativity. Instead of simply displaying clothes, the exhibit groups pieces by themes related to the human body—like depictions of the “Classical Body,” the “Naked Body,” the “Aging Body,” and the “Pregnant Body.” To highlight the connection between clothing and the body, garments will be shown on stands and platforms, treating the artworks and body types as equals. Artist Samar Hejazi has also created polished steel mannequin heads, encouraging visitors to see their own reflections in the displays.

The exhibition features striking combinations of clothing and art that spark conversation across different eras. Highlights include a modern Y/Project suit alongside an ancient Roman statue, a beautiful 1880s dress next to a study for Seurat’s famous painting, a Comme des Garçons outfit paired with a dynamic early 20th-century painting by Max Weber, and a current Dilara Findikoglu dress shown with a Victorian-era mourning brooch from Tiffany & Co.

The 2026 Met Gala, which is the main fundraiser for The Costume Institute, promises to be a spectacular night. It will bring together leading celebrities and showcase the latest fashion alongside historical art. The accompanying exhibition, titled Costume Art, will open to the public on May 10, 2026, and will explore how clothing both influences and reflects our world.
