The Legend of Zelda is having a huge year! The popular Nintendo series celebrated its 40th anniversary in February 2026, and there’s plenty for fans to enjoy. Along with a new movie and upcoming remakes, the Zelda community is also joining in the celebration. Fans are especially excited about the return of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and early previews of the remake look fantastic.
So, I was checking out Video Game Esoterica on YouTube, and they dropped some awesome news about The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker! Apparently, someone’s been working on getting the game running natively on PC, which is huge. It’s a favorite Zelda title for a lot of us, and they’ve been decompiling it for months. The good news is, they’re over 60% done with the decompilation process now, which means we’re getting closer to potentially playing it on PC!
Video Game Esoterica announced that the code for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess has been fully decompiled, which is a huge achievement! They also shared that the decompilation of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is over 60% complete – great news for retro gaming fans! This progress is a big reason why older games are becoming popular again, and it raises the possibility of a PC port for Wind Waker sometime in the future.
Fans are once again recreating a classic Nintendo game, this time working on a PC port of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. This is part of a growing trend of unofficial fan projects that have successfully brought several Zelda titles – like Twilight Princess and Minish Cap – to PC. While it’s no surprise fans are tackling The Wind Waker, a beloved GameCube game, the project is still in early stages. A full port won’t be possible until the game is fully decompiled, and current estimates suggest it could be 2027 or even 2028 before the finished port is released.
Fortunately, you don’t need a computer to play The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Originally released on the GameCube, it’s also available on the Wii U and Nintendo Switch. If you have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, you can even play the original version right now! While the updated HD version is still only playable on older Nintendo consoles, many fans are hoping it will eventually be added to the Switch library. People have been requesting the HD version for a long time because of its improvements, which is why there’s so much excitement about the possibility of a new PC port for The Legend of Zelda games.
