Everyone knows Gene Roddenberry brought us Star Trek, but I recently rediscovered another show he helped create – a space opera that ran for five seasons. Honestly, it’s slipped under the radar for over twenty years, but I was surprised to find you can actually watch it all online for free on . It’s worth a look if you’re a fan of classic sci-fi and want to see another side of Roddenberry’s vision.
I’m excited that all five seasons of Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda are now available to stream, even if there are ads. It’s really cool knowing the show is built on ideas Gene Roddenberry himself had, even though it didn’t actually air until 2000 – nine years after he passed away. Robert Hewitt Wolfe really brought Roddenberry’s vision to life, and it meant a lot that Majel Barrett, Gene’s wife, was involved as an executive producer. Andromeda was one of two shows created after his death using his earlier concepts, alongside Earth: Final Conflict.
Kevin Sorbo Led the Show’s Ensemble Cast
The sci-fi series Andromeda featured Kevin Sorbo, known for Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, as Captain Dylan Hunt, who commands the starship Andromeda Ascendant. The series starts with Hunt attempting to save the Systems Commonwealth—a struggling intergalactic government—when he’s pulled near a black hole. This causes him to travel 300 years into the future, to a time where the Commonwealth has fallen and the galaxy is filled with chaos.
Refusing to give up on a better future, Hunt sets out to restore the Commonwealth, gathering a team of unique individuals to help him. This crew aboard the Andromeda includes Beka Valentine (Lisa Ryder), a skilled pilot and smuggler; Trance Gemini (Laura Bertram), an enigmatic being from another world; Tyr Anasazi (Keith Hamilton Cobb), a complex and sometimes questionable warrior; and Rev Bem (Brent Stait), the ship’s science officer. The Andromeda itself is almost a character, thanks to its advanced artificial intelligence.
Majel Barrett Was Very Pleased With Andromeda
Barrett described the show as “spectacular” in an interview with Little Review, praising its creativity and potential. They felt it allowed for greater imagination, leading to more genuine and honest storytelling – something they hadn’t always achieved in other projects. Barrett was particularly pleased to find this level of authenticity in this particular work, expressing immense satisfaction and describing their collaborator, Kevin, as a joy to work with.
The show originally aired in October 2000 and ran for five seasons, concluding in May 2005 with a total of 110 episodes. While it gained a dedicated fanbase, offering a grittier and more unpredictable sci-fi experience than previous shows, its viewership decreased over time. Creative shifts after Robert Hewitt Wolfe left during the second season may have also contributed to its eventual decline in popularity.
All five seasons of Andromeda are currently streaming for free on YouTube.
