Amazon Prime Video is adding a great selection of new movies to its already huge library this May. With over 20,000 titles – the most of any major streaming service – Prime Video is constantly expanding its offerings. This month’s additions include award-winning films, popular musicals, exciting action series, funny comedies, and timeless classics.
It’s tough to pick the best from all the new content! While titles like All Dogs Go to Heaven, Babe, Get Shorty, Scarface, Spies in Disguise, and Jeepers Creepers are also being added to Prime Video this month, the biggest news is actually the new TV shows. A new season of Citadel is coming soon, and Spider-Noir is making its debut. These shows have captured most of the attention, causing many to miss the great selection of new movies now available.
Prime Video is adding a bunch of fantastic movies, including a new film based on one of their biggest TV shows. It’s a great time to be a subscriber, and these movies are definitely worth checking out when they’re released.
Missing (2023)
The 2018 film Searching was a popular success, notable for telling a mystery entirely through the lens of computer and phone screens. A follow-up film, Missing, released in 2023, takes a similar approach. While not a direct sequel, Missing also unfolds through screens and centers on a young woman’s urgent search for her mother, who vanishes while on vacation with her new boyfriend.
While Missing received good reviews and did okay in theaters, it didn’t reach a wide audience. Luckily, its arrival on Prime Video on May 20th should help more people discover it, especially with a strong performance by Storm Reid.
Dallas Buyers Club (2013)
“The McConaissance” was a term fans used to describe a period when Matthew McConaughey was on a roll. He delivered standout performances in several critically acclaimed projects, including memorable roles in The Wolf of Wall Street, the underrated Mud, the TV series True Detective, and the blockbuster film Interstellar.
For me, Matthew McConaughey’s absolute best work is in Dallas Buyers Club. He rightfully won an Oscar for playing Ron Woodroof, a man with AIDS who bravely started bringing in alternative medications into Texas to help himself and other patients. If you haven’t seen it, it’s becoming available on May 1st, and trust me, it’s a performance you won’t forget.
Hot Fuzz (2007)
Edgar Wright’s “Three Flavours Cornetto” films are some of the best comedies ever made. Each movie playfully imitates a different genre – Shaun of the Dead spoofs horror, and The World’s End takes on science fiction. The second film in the series, Hot Fuzz, which parodies action movies, will be available on May 1st.
Many people think Hot Fuzz is the funniest movie in the series. It stars Simon Pegg as Nicholas Angel, a very successful police officer who’s moved to a quiet town. There, he teams up with Danny Butterman, played by Nick Frost, and together they discover the town isn’t as peaceful as it appears.
Blink Twice (2024)
A captivating new thriller, Blink Twice, arrives on Prime Video May 21st. This film marks the directorial debut of actress Zoë Kravitz and features a strong cast. The story follows a group of women invited to a private island by a wealthy man, where they discover a disturbing plot unfolding.
Channing Tatum plays the billionaire in a surprisingly unsettling way, while Naomi Ackie and Adria Arjona deliver strong performances as the characters the audience is meant to support. The film also features a talented cast including Alia Shawkat, Geena Davis, Christian Slater, and Simon Rex. Zoe Kravitz’s directorial debut is impressive, and audiences will be eager to see what she does next.
Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War (2026)
Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan has been a popular character in movies for decades, starting with The Hunt for Red October and continuing with the 2014 film featuring Chris Pine. But the recent Jack Ryan series with John Krasinski is arguably one of the strongest adaptations yet.
I was a huge fan of the Jack Ryan series when it was on TV, from 2018 to 2023, so I’m really excited it’s coming back as a movie on May 20th! It’s awesome that John Krasinski is returning, and we’ll also see Wendell Pierce and Betty Gabriel again. Plus, Sienna Miller is joining the cast, which is fantastic! Based on the trailer, I think anyone who enjoyed the show is going to absolutely love this new film.
Mamma Mia! (2008)
Before Wicked became a box office hit, Mamma Mia! held the record as the most successful movie adaptation of a stage musical. The film is known for its ABBA songs and stars a fantastic cast including Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep, and Colin Firth.
Mamma Mia! is a lighthearted and enjoyable movie that’s perfect for repeat viewings. Both longtime fans and new viewers will likely find themselves wanting to watch it over and over. Beyond its popularity, the film was also nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Musical or Comedy.
Beginners (2010)
Beginners is a moving and realistic film based on the director’s personal life. It tells the story of Oliver Fields whose life is turned upside down when his elderly father comes out as gay, impacting both of their lives in a profound way, even if briefly.
Ewan McGregor gives a standout performance in this film, and Christopher Plummer is phenomenal as his father – a role that earned him an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and other awards. The movie also stars Mélanie Laurent and will be available to stream on Prime Video beginning May 1st.
Goodfellas (1990)
Few movies are as recognizable as Goodfellas. When people debate the best gangster films of all time – considering titles like The Godfather and American Gangster – Goodfellas is always a strong contender, and it’s also considered one of Martin Scorsese’s best films.
On May 1st, you can stream the iconic story of mobster Henry Hill on Prime Video. Featuring a stellar cast including Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro, and Joe Pesci, this critically acclaimed film—boasting a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes—continues to impress audiences today.
Do The Right Thing (1989)
Spike Lee is a highly respected and influential director. Choosing his best film is difficult, but his classic Do the Right Thing will be available on Prime Video starting May 1st. Remarkably, the film still feels incredibly relevant and powerful decades after its release.
Spike Lee’s film, Do the Right Thing, is set on a sweltering summer day in Brooklyn and explores the rising racial conflict between the local Black community and the Italian-American family who run the neighborhood pizzeria. The film’s script earned Lee an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay, and it remains a powerful and relevant movie today.
One Battle After Another (2025)
The critically acclaimed Best Picture winner is now available on Prime Video starting May 23rd. If you missed it in theaters, you can now watch it with your Prime subscription!
I just finished watching One Battle After Another, and wow! It’s a really gripping story about a former revolutionary, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, who’s on the run with his daughter (Chase Infiniti) from a seriously corrupt military officer – Sean Penn is fantastic in that role. Honestly, the whole cast is incredible – Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Benicio Del Toro are all phenomenal. It’s one of those movies with a cast that really elevates the whole experience, and I think everyone should check it out.
