The popular animated sports comedy, which many compared to Space Jam when it was in theaters, is coming to Netflix later this month.
Netflix has announced that the movie GOAT will be available to stream starting May 14th. The film was a box office success, earning $192 million globally with a production budget of $80-90 million. GOAT stands for ‘Greatest of All Time,’ and the movie tells the story of a goat who wants to become a champion at a sport called ‘roarball’.
GOAT Arrives on Netflix on May 14
From the creators of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse at Sony Pictures Animation comes GOAT. This animated film is set in a world entirely populated by animals and tells the story of Will, a young goat with big aspirations. Voiced by Caleb McLaughlin of Stranger Things, Will dreams of becoming a professional roarball player – a sport similar to basketball.
Will faces tough competition from quicker, more powerful animals, making him feel like an underdog, but he never gives up on his goals. The movie GOAT also features a fantastic cast of voice actors, including Gabrielle Union, Aaron Pierre, Nicola Coughlan, Nick Kroll, Jenifer Lewis, Patton Oswalt, and many more. Basketball star Steph Curry even makes his acting debut in the film!
The movie GOAT premiered in theaters on February 13, 2026, alongside Wuthering Heights, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, and Crime 101. It benefited from the fact that none of its competing films appealed to younger viewers, and it opened with a strong $35 million domestically, landing in second place behind Wuthering Heights. The film continued to perform well in its second weekend, earning an additional $17.2 million.
The animated film GOAT finished its time in theaters with over $190 million in earnings, likely because critics and audiences quickly fell in love with it. It currently has an 85% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 87 reviews. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film features a great voice cast, appealing animation, and a positive message for children, making it a well-made and enjoyable experience that comes close to being a classic.
The film has been a hit with audiences, earning a remarkable 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 2,500 reviews. Viewers describe it as a heartwarming and enjoyable adventure for the whole family, praising its message that anyone can achieve great things. One user summed it up perfectly: “GOAT is GOATED!”
GOAT Drew Several Comparisons to Space Jam Upon Release
The movie GOAT, with its exciting story about a determined underdog in the world of sports, immediately reminded many viewers of Space Jam when it came out – and some even preferred it! While Space Jam relied on the classic Looney Tunes characters, GOAT features a unique group of stylish animals, and its animation style is very appealing to modern audiences of all ages.
Generally, GOAT feels like a modern take on Space Jam, offering a fun, family-friendly story about the joy of sports and overcoming challenges. Whether a sequel will be made, like Space Jam: A New Legacy, is still uncertain. However, audiences are definitely getting more from GOAT than they did from the long-awaited Space Jam sequel in 2021.
GOAT arrives on Netflix on May 14.
