Narnia reboot from Barbie’s Greta Gerwig gets new release date for cinemas and Netflix

Greta Gerwig, the creator of the hit movie Barbie, will be reimagining C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia as a new series of films for Netflix. The first movie is scheduled to be released in theaters and on Netflix soon.

The first Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew movie will be shown in cinemas, including IMAX, starting February 12, 2027. It will then be available to stream on Netflix beginning April 2, 2027. Previously, the film was planned for a small theatrical release in November of this year.

This new fantasy-adventure movie is the very first time Lewis’s novel has been adapted for the screen. Although it’s the sixth book published in the series, the story actually takes place first in the overall timeline.

This announcement is perfectly timed! The Magician’s Nephew was first published on May 2nd, 1955 – that was 71 years ago!

The film features both a renowned writer-director and a fantastic cast. Leading the ensemble are major stars like Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Daniel Craig, and Meryl Streep.

David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell are joining the cast as Digory Kirke—a character previously portrayed by Jim Broadbent in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe—and Polly Plummer.

Greta Gerwig expressed her excitement about the film, highlighting the fantastic collaboration with Netflix and IMAX. She shared that she’s eager for audiences to experience the movie in theaters on February 12th and on Netflix starting April 2nd.

I first discovered The Magician’s Nephew as a child, and I was immediately captivated by the beautiful and imaginative idea of a lion’s song creating the world of Narnia.

The filmmaker, known for directing films like Little Women and Barbie, shared that while she didn’t always plan to be a director, she’s always been inspired by the power of music and thrilled to bring that vision to life.

Following the release of the three Narnia movies from 2005 to 2011, plans for future films stalled. Efforts to adapt The Magician’s Nephew and The Silver Chair didn’t succeed, and the franchise remained inactive for over ten years.

Greta Gerwig will direct two movies based on the Narnia books for Netflix. While the second film isn’t officially announced, it’s expected to be The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, as that’s the next book in the series.

The new Narnia movie, ‘The Magician’s Nephew,’ will be in theaters on February 12, 2027, and will be available to stream on Netflix starting April 2nd.
