Fans recently discovered a surprising link between the popular show Supernatural and Nathan Fillion’s crime thriller. It’s been six years since Supernatural ended, and while stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles have moved on to other successful projects like Walker, The Boys, and Tracker, they still feel connected to their iconic roles as Sam and Dean Winchester – and they’re happy about it!
Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles became close friends while filming Supernatural, which makes their continued public appearances together feel natural. They still attend fan conventions, sometimes joined by Misha Collins. The show itself remains popular, with both longtime fans rewatching and new viewers discovering it for the first time. Interestingly, Supernatural is also referenced in season 8 of Nathan Fillion’s show, The Rookie.
The Rookie Season 8’s Documentary Episode Confirms Supernatural’s Existence
As The Rookie neared the end of its 2025-2026 season, it revisited a familiar format with the episode “Survive the Streets.” The episode featured a documentary-style approach, with John Nolan and the team sharing the story of what began as a potential suicide and quickly became a complex conspiracy. Although this storytelling style has received mixed reactions over the years, ABC seems determined to continue using it on The Rookie. A highlight of the episode was the unexpected appearance of Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles.
Fans of Supernatural were thrilled by a quick cameo from Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. The duo appeared in a documentary-style episode of The Rookie, discussing their 15 years playing demon hunters on The CW. Even in a short appearance, they delivered their classic playful banter. Most excitingly, the cameo officially confirmed that Supernatural and The Rookie exist in the same fictional universe.
Will Jared Padalecki & Jensen Ackles Return In The Rookie?
I have to admit, episode 15 of The Rookie season 8 felt like a real misstep – honestly, it’s been the weakest episode of the show so far this season. It’s disappointing because the show has done such a fantastic job keeping things fresh and interesting all year. But, if this documentary-style episode means we’ll get to see Padalecki and Ackles play bigger roles down the line, I think any criticism it receives will be totally worth it. I’m really hoping it sets up something special for them!
It’s unlikely we’ll see them again this season, as only a few episodes of The Rookie remain. However, with the show already renewed for the 2026-2027 season, ABC has plenty of time to potentially bring back the Supernatural stars in some capacity. While a full-time role isn’t probable, The Rookie is known for featuring well-known actors in recurring parts, so they might be able to create something similar for this duo.
