The original PlayStation was a revolutionary gaming console. Its powerful hardware, especially the custom graphics chip designed by Sony, allowed developers to try new and innovative things. This experimentation led to the creation of iconic and beloved games like Final Fantasy IX and Metal Gear Solid.
However, some PlayStation 1 games, like Crash Bandicoot and Spider-Man, seemed more exciting when they first came out. Today, they don’t stand out as much, as many PS1 titles haven’t been truly great for a long time.
PaRappa the Rapper Is a Wrap
Okay, so I’m totally addicted to this game called PaRappa the Rapper. You play as this little dog, PaRappa, and his whole goal is to win over this girl, Sunny Funny. It’s a rhythm game, so you have to nail the timing to help him through a bunch of different challenges – learning karate, getting his driver’s license, even working at a flea market and baking a cake! The coolest part is you do all this by rapping along with all sorts of characters, like cops and TV chefs. It’s surprisingly hard, but so much fun!
Back in the day, PaRappa the Rapper was a unique and enjoyable game, largely due to its creative scenarios. However, it’s surprisingly difficult to complete, and the game is quite short – especially when considering the standards of 1997. Despite its legacy, many players struggle to get past just a few levels.
Spider-Man Is Just Cobwebs
The action-adventure game Spider-Man lets you play as the famous Marvel superhero as he fights villains throughout New York City. You’ll face classic enemies like Venom, Mysterio, Rhino, and Scorpion, as well as dangerous supervillains like Doc Ock, who is conducting a crazy experiment involving symbiotes.
Compared to other Spider-Man games based on the movies, this one has some noticeable problems. The biggest issue is that Spider-Man can’t usually touch the ground without losing health, which severely limits the enjoyment of exploring the open world.
The Phantom Menace Truly Is Menacing
I recently played Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, which is a game based on the movie. Basically, it’s all about how the Sith are causing trouble with a big trade argument between planets. You play as the Jedi – I got to control Obi-Wan Kenobi! – and your job is to stop the Sith and get things sorted out with the trade dispute.
When Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace first came out, it felt unique because it let players experience the world of Star Wars like being in the movies. But that initial excitement has faded, and now the game is mostly remembered for its uninspired missions and awkward combat.
Crash Bandicoot Is a Wreck
Crash Bandicoot is a classic platforming game where you play as Crash, who must stop the evil Dr. Neo Cortex from taking over the world using genetically altered animals. Along the way, Crash meets a variety of strange creatures, like the straitjacket-wearing Ripper Roo and the gun-toting Pinstripe Potoroo.
This early Crash Bandicoot game feels more restrictive than the ones that came after it. It’s also frustrating because you can’t save your progress very often – you either have to find hidden bonus areas or beat a boss to get a code that lets you continue playing.
Grand Theft Auto Isn’t So Much of a Steal Nowadays
Grand Theft Auto is an action-packed game where players take on the role of one of eight characters who complete missions for various criminal groups. The game begins in Liberty City, but the story expands to include San Andreas and Vice City, letting players interact with a diverse cast of characters, including crooked police officers and elderly gangsters.
Most players today associate Grand Theft Auto with 3D games like GTA: San Andreas or GTA 4. This older title is often forgotten, and it stands out for its overly simple missions that drag on for too long.
Final Fantasy VII Is Less Fantastic Than One May Realize
Okay, so the game’s story is basically about this group called AVALANCHE – they’re like eco-terrorists trying to take down this huge energy company, Shinra. Shinra’s sucking the life out of the planet, and AVALANCHE is fighting back. But it gets complicated because I play as Cloud, and he used to be part of SOLDIER, which is basically Shinra’s elite military force. So I’m dealing with a lot of baggage from my past while trying to do the right thing, you know?
When Final Fantasy VII was released, it was considered a groundbreaking game, pushing the boundaries of what was possible. However, looking back, Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy IX actually represent the true next step in the series. Final Fantasy VII, while influential, feels somewhat messy and awkward to play. A major issue is the constant stream of random enemy encounters that happen very close together, which can be frustrating.
Resident Evil’s Humble Beginnings Are Forgettable
Resident Evil is a scary survival horror game where players control officers Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine. They find shelter in what appears to be an empty mansion, only to discover it’s overrun by monsters – including zombies – that have already defeated many of their team.
The game has several flaws, starting with its weak camera. The gameplay also suffers from a frustratingly slow pace, especially when moving between areas in the mansion. Surprisingly, the notoriously bad voice acting might actually provide some much-needed distraction from these issues.
Gex: Enter the Gecko Had Its Share of Issues
Gex is a classic platforming game where a retired gecko hero is forced back into action. A villain named Rez is threatening to destroy all television broadcasts, and the government enlists Gex to stop him. Gex must travel through various TV shows to defeat Rez and save the airwaves.
Gex: Enter the Gecko keeps the series’ trademark sarcastic wit and features well-designed levels. However, the gameplay itself isn’t as strong as other 3D platformers, and the platforming feels a bit clunky. The camera also causes problems, even though you can control it manually – it often seems to move on its own.
3D Lemmings Couldn’t Be More Unnecessarily Ambitious
3D Lemmings is a puzzle game that brings the classic Lemmings gameplay into a 3D world. It was a challenging project, requiring new abilities for the lemmings to navigate the 3D landscapes. For instance, instead of blockers that make lemmings turn around, this version uses ‘turners’ to rotate them 90 degrees towards their goal.
While 3D Lemmings started out feeling fresh and new, it quickly became frustrating due to technical problems. The biggest issue was the awkward camera, which was difficult to control and often made it hard to keep track of the lemmings. If not for that, the repetitive sound of the lemmings’ voices would have been the most annoying part of the game.
Gran Turismo Has Been Beat by Its Successors
As a racing game fan, I remember when the original Gran Turismo came out and everyone was saying it was the most realistic racing experience you could get on any console. What really stood out was that it featured actual cars from brands like Toyota and Nissan. Plus, it was incredibly smooth – it could run at 60 frames per second, which was a huge deal back then!
While all of this is appealing, the Gran Turismo series clearly had room to improve. The original Gran Turismo now feels like a product of its time – developers were striving for realism that the technology just couldn’t quite deliver. Specifically, the game is difficult to control around corners because of issues with the throttle.
