A recent preview for the Yellowstone spinoff, Dutton Ranch, included a reference to Kevin Costner’s character, John Dutton.
Kelly Reilly, who plays Beth Dutton, is at the dinner table with her husband, Rip Wheeler, portrayed by Cole Hauser.
Looking at an old photo of John, alongside his familiar brown hat, always brings tears to their eyes.
Beth said sadly, ‘I miss him.’ Rip chimed in, ‘We’ve kept the best of your father alive in us.’
Then the clip shows plenty of action like a bar fight and a ranch on fire.
Beth warns her adopted son, Carter (played by Finn Little), that difficult times are ahead. Carter responds with surprising optimism, saying, ‘Sounds like fun.’
Annette Bening plays Beulah Jackson, the shrewd owner of a competing ranch, and her character has a tense showdown with Beth.
Rio Palo is a little trickier,” she explains. Then Beth tells Bening, who plays a strong, independent cowgirl, “What you’ve built is wonderful, but it needs to last.”
Dutton Ranch is a new series that will continue the story after Yellowstone concludes in December 2024.
Okay, let’s talk about what’s new on Paramount+! I’m so excited about their upcoming series – it kicks off on May 15th! They’re launching with two episodes right away, and then it’ll be a fresh episode every week for the rest of the nine-episode season. Mark your calendars – you won’t want to miss it!
The short preview shows Beth and Rip starting a new life in South Texas, having moved there after the sale of her father’s large ranch in Montana.
Rip discovers a body buried on their expansive new ranch. A violent fight breaks out, and Beth is later seen holding a gun. The trouble began with a conflict involving a neighboring ranch.
‘What a day,’ Beth says to which Rip replies, ‘Welcome to Texas.’
The film also stars Juan Pablo Raba, Jai Courtney, J.R. Villarreal, Marc Menchaca, and Natalie Alyn Lind.
Dutton Ranch is a series developed by Chad Feehan, who also serves as executive producer and showrunner. The characters were originally created by executive producers Sheridan and John Linson.
Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe is expanding with several shows. These include the prequel series 1883 and 1923, and the upcoming sequel series The Madison, featuring Michelle Pfeiffer, Patrick J. Adams, and Matthew Fox. Another sequel, Marshalls, will star Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton.
Costner was suddenly removed from the show after a difficult departure stemming from clashes with the filming schedule of his Western movie series, Horizon.
The show ran for one more month after filming in Yellowstone concluded, finishing with its fifth and last season.
Following Kevin Costner’s departure from the show, Luke Grimes – who played his on-screen son, Kayce Dutton – revealed they hadn’t spoken for a month, fueling speculation about a possible rift between them.
He explained to Men’s Health in December 2024 that they haven’t spoken since their last conversation. He clarified it wasn’t due to any bad blood, but simply because the other person is Kevin Costner.
He chuckled and said, ‘He’s very important. I happen to have his number, but I don’t think it’s right for me to contact him. If he wants to get in touch, he knows how.’
We were all surprised by how things unfolded, though there had been rumors of trouble brewing beforehand.
‘But just, like, in life, man, these things happen. They happen fast and they’re not predictable.’
Grimes likened Costner’s unexpected departure to the way he was unprepared for his father’s death years earlier, suggesting both events were unforeseen.
He shared that he lost his father unexpectedly a few years ago. He explained that life often throws sudden changes at people, forcing them to make difficult choices. In the context of the show ‘Yellowstone,’ this personal experience contributed to the escalating drama and intensity.
He explained that Kevin Costner’s choice to leave after almost eight years made it feel like Yellowstone had reached its natural conclusion.
When he didn’t return, it felt like a crisis point, forcing us to take immediate action, he explained to People magazine in November 2024.
As a lifestyle expert, I always saw the family patriarch’s departure as inevitable. It was the natural progression of the story, really. The core question became: how do these children, this whole family, cope and rebuild when the person they relied on most is no longer there?
