Story Highlights
- Rainbow Six Mobile generated $2.31M gross revenue and 6.75M downloads in its debut month.
- The Division Resurgence in return earned $2.8M gross revenue with 3.42M downloads.
- Rainbow Six Mobile led in player reach, while The Division Resurgence showed stronger monetization.
I recently analyzed how well The Division Resurgence did in its first month, which led me to wonder how it compared to Rainbow Six Mobile. Since Rainbow Six Mobile launched a couple of months prior, I decided to compare the performance of both games.
Let’s revisit the performance during the first month. When we compare the results from the initial 30 days, the differences are quite noticeable, particularly in key areas.
Rainbow Six Mobile and The Division Resurgence: A revenue tale of two launches
Rainbow Six Mobile quickly gained traction with 6.75 million downloads and generated $2.31 million in revenue, resulting in a net revenue of $1.53 million. However, the game’s ability to convert downloads into revenue was relatively low, with an average revenue per download of just $0.20.
Meanwhile, The Division Resurgence generated around $1.72 million in revenue (nearly $2.8 million before expenses) and was downloaded 3.42 million times since it became available. Although fewer people downloaded it, players spent more money within the game—about $0.50 per download—suggesting a user base more inclined to make purchases.
Rainbow Six Mobile has been available for a while now and has generated over $3 million in net revenue and around $4.63 million in player spending. It’s also nearing 13 million downloads. While revenue per daily user (RpD) has seen a small increase to $0.24 compared to its launch month, it remains relatively stable.
The Audience behind the numbers
So, both these games are really popular in Western countries, but the way people are playing them differs a bit. With The Division Resurgence, I’ve noticed the US is huge – they bring in around 45% of the total money made on the game. Japan is doing pretty well too, around 10%, but everyone else shares the rest. Basically, the US is the biggest driver for that one!
Rainbow Six Mobile is most popular in the U.S., accounting for about 33% of its players. However, the game earns revenue more equally from players around the world. While the U.S. leads in downloads, Brazil is second, and several other countries contribute significantly to the total number of players, even if they don’t generate as much revenue individually.
The Division Resurgence seems to rely more on players in the United States than the original game, earning almost half of its revenue from that country alone. The success of both games in the U.S. and Brazil could be because they both had early test versions (betas) launched in those two countries.
At their peak: Where revenue and download numbers maxed out
Let’s also look at the download and revenue numbers, which are pretty noteworthy. Rainbow Six Mobile saw a huge initial response, with downloads reaching around 1.2 to 1.3 million on its second day. Revenue peaked at over $90,000 by the third day. As you’d expect, both numbers then decreased, particularly downloads, which dropped significantly within the first week.
Unlike the initial surge of other games, The Division Resurgence saw a steadier increase in downloads. It reached its peak of over 400,000 downloads on April 5th, coinciding with its highest revenue of around $100,000.
Looking at when revenue was highest, both products performed similarly, with both reaching over 90. However, R6M saw a much higher peak in downloads – about three times more than the other shooting game.
Built Differently, Performing Differently
While both games share similarities, they’re designed quite differently. Rainbow Six Mobile focuses on the classic 5v5 tactical shooter experience, featuring small maps, unique character abilities, environments you can destroy, and a big emphasis on teamwork. Games are fast-paced, require skill, and are very competitive – we highlighted its potential in our review.
The Division Resurgence is a bold attempt to bring the popular third-person shooter RPG to mobile devices. It offers a large, shared open world, story-driven missions, and a focus on improving your character and gear through cooperative gameplay. Like many mobile games, it lets you spend money to enhance your equipment, customize your character, and progress further in the long run, with unique areas like the Dark Zone offering both player-versus-player and player-versus-environment challenges.
The numbers also reflect a difference in player engagement: Rainbow Six Mobile has seen twice as many downloads as The Division Resurgence. While both games are popular, The Division Resurgence seems to be better at getting players to make purchases within the game.
Final Thoughts
To be honest, this isn’t a straight-up comparison – it’s more about satisfying my own curiosity. However, it still highlights how differently these two game releases have gone, even though they were both published by the same company.
Ultimately, each game has different goals. Rainbow Six Mobile aimed for a large audience and quickly attracted many players. The Division Resurgence, on the other hand, prioritized a more engaged player base, focusing on quality over quantity and successfully converting players into those who spend money in the game.
In the long run, the key to success for these games will be keeping players engaged and returning regularly. While initial sales figures are helpful, it’s too early to definitively declare a winner – we need to see which games can maintain a loyal player base over time.
Rainbow Six Mobile is off to a promising start, and the recently revealed content plan is particularly encouraging. The first season of The Division Mobile is also adding some great new features. Because of this, it’s too early to accurately predict the long-term success of either game based on just a few months of data. Both have a lot of potential, and we’ll need to see how they develop over time.
