The family of Samuel Monroe Jr., known for his role in “Menace II Society,” is facing further hardship as his health is said to be declining.
TMZ reports that 52-year-old actor’s wife, Shawna Stewart, shared on Tuesday that he’s battling a new medical issue while receiving life support at a hospital in Southern California.
Stewart shared that her husband was recently diagnosed with a serious lung infection called MRSA pneumonia.
Doctors have started Monroe on a new antibiotic to fight the infection, and now his family is hoping it will work. They’re waiting to see if he improves.
The Daily Mail has reached out to Stewart for comment.
I’ve been following MRSA pneumonia closely, and it’s really concerning. From what I understand, and sources like Healthline confirm, people who get it – often while they’re in the hospital – can develop severely inflamed lungs. This inflammation causes fluid or pus to build up, making it incredibly hard to breathe. It’s a frightening illness, and I try to stay informed about it.
MRSA pneumonia is hard to treat because it doesn’t respond to many common antibiotics.
If MRSA pneumonia isn’t treated promptly, it can lead to sepsis, a life-threatening condition where the body’s response to infection harms its own tissues. Sepsis can then progress to septic shock, causing dangerously low blood pressure and potentially organ failure.
Monroe was previously revealed to be battling for his life in the hospital.
The actor, known for a minor role in the 1993 film Menace II Society alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Tyrin Turner, and Jada Pinkett Smith, is currently on life support at a hospital in Southern California, according to his family who spoke with TMZ.
Sam’s mother, Joyce Patton, shared a heartfelt message on Facebook, expressing her faith and asking for prayers for her son. She wrote that while she trusts in God’s plan, she humbly asks for his compassion and mercy, and reaffirmed her deep love for Sam.
Samuel’s family has started a GoFundMe to help cover his medical expenses. The campaign description explains that any donation, big or small, will help support his family and ensure his children, Kingston and Brooklynn, are cared for while he recovers.
The crowdfunding page also shared that Monroe Jr. has had two brain surgeries and is currently on life support.
Dondré Monroe is married to Shawna Stewart, who works in tech and does voice acting. They have two children: Kingston, age 12, and Brooklynn, age 11.
Stewart told Complex that the actor was on life support while fighting a serious case of meningitis.
About a year and a half ago, Samuel became ill with meningitis while filming in Las Vegas, she explained.
He visited multiple hospitals, but his condition was misdiagnosed time and again. As a result of this oversight, his meningitis went untreated for eight months.
She explained that when doctors finally figured out what the infection was, it had already spread to both his spine and brain.
In a statement to Complex, Stewart asked for continued prayers for Samuel, who is currently on life support due to meningitis. The family is hopeful for his recovery.
Monroe Jr. has also starred in Tales from the Hood, Set It Off, Out All Night and NYPD Blue.
He’s currently a director, writer, and producer, and is creating his own TV series called ‘The Halls’. The show focuses on the stories of children entering the juvenile justice system.
In Menace II Society, he portrayed Ilena’s cousin as Ilena was portrayed by Erin Leshawn Wiley.
Kaydee ‘Caine’ Lawson, played by Tyrin Turner, gets Ilena pregnant and then violently attacks Monroe Jr.’s character.
Ilena’s cousin retaliates by driving past Caine and shooting at him with his friends, ultimately leading to Caine’s death at the film’s conclusion.
Monroe Jr.’s latest role was as Zero in 2022 television film Shine Kings.
He played the lead role of The Intruder in the 2021 movie Lockdown 2025, a film about a viral outbreak that causes a country-wide lockdown and the implementation of martial law.
Monroe Jr. also pursued a career as a rapper, collaborating with well-known producers like Battlecat and Duane Nettlesby on his music.
