Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 7
The second-to-last episode of Daredevil: Born Again is now available, and it’s packed with fun references for Marvel fans – including hidden details, connections to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, and callbacks to the old Daredevil and other Marvel shows that used to stream on Netflix.
Season 2, episode 7 of Daredevil: Born Again finds Mayor Fisk struggling to maintain power after the death of his wife. With Karen Page arrested and facing trial, both Fisk and Matt Murdock are making significant moves that will determine the future of New York City. Here’s a rundown of the episode’s most notable Easter eggs, references to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, and nods to the previous Daredevil series on Netflix.
The Biggest and Best Easter Eggs & References In Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Episode 7
After Karen Page was arrested, Mayor Fisk went to see her in jail. He told her he’s taken people from her, specifically referencing Wesley, his former advisor, who Karen shot and killed in the first season of the Netflix series Daredevil.
Jessica Jones demands information from Mr. Charles, who points out he’s the only person who can put her in touch with Luke Cage. He tells her Luke is currently working abroad on a charitable mission, suggesting she needn’t bother looking for him. This confirms Luke’s whereabouts, which were hinted at in the previous episode, and explains his absence before his planned return in the third season of Daredevil: Born Again.
Matt playfully points out Jessica’s tendency towards pessimism, referencing their long-standing, often conflicting, partnership that began during the events of the 2017 series The Defenders.
Daredevil allows Bullseye to leave, hoping he might redeem himself with a single act of kindness. However, Daredevil makes it clear he still deeply resents Benjamin Poindexter for the lives he’s ruined, specifically mentioning Foggy Nelson and Father Lantom. He also recalls Ray Nadeem, an FBI agent who was used by Wilson Fisk in season 3 of the Netflix series Daredevil and ultimately sacrificed everything – his job and life – to stop Fisk.
As a big MCU fan, I was really happy to see Brett Mahoney back in Daredevil: Born Again! You might remember him from the Netflix Daredevil series – he was Foggy Nelson’s childhood friend and a great help to both Foggy and Murdock as an NYPD officer. Now, he’s climbed the ranks to Chief of Detectives, and it looks like he’s using his power to hold Karen Page at the 15th Precinct. It’s interesting to see how his story is unfolding in this new season!
Bullseye might be turning over a new leaf. After Daredevil offers him a chance to do something good, Bullseye ends up protecting the governor, who Kingpin ordered to be killed for challenging his power. This could lead to a redemption story for Bullseye, opening up exciting possibilities within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Interestingly, this mirrors storylines from the comics where Bullseye joined teams like the Thunderbolts and Dark Avengers.
The question, “What kind of person kills their own brother?” refers to a tragic event in Karen Page’s past, as shown in flashbacks during season 3 of Daredevil. Karen was driving when her younger brother, Kevin, died in a car accident, and her father held her responsible. This loss deeply affected Karen and led her to leave home and eventually move to New York, as depicted in the first season of Daredevil.
Mentioning Frank Castle clearly upsets Heater, likely because of his past relationship with Karen. Both the old Netflix Marvel shows and the new ‘Born Again’ series show that Karen and The Punisher have a deep connection, and Frank cares about her more than anyone else.
Right before things escalate with Karen and a physical fight between Heather and Page, a reflection of the serial killer Muse appears in a mirror. This hints at the lasting trauma Heather experienced after surviving Muse’s attack in the first season of Born Again. Considering earlier dialogue about impulsive behavior and set photos suggesting a new Muse will appear in season 3, Heather’s storyline in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is shaping up to be a compelling and potentially dark one.
After being shot by the Advanced Tech Task Force following Karen Page’s first court appearance, Matt Murdock (Daredevil) struggles to reach Clinton Church. Weak and wounded, he’s shown praying for strength when Jessica Jones appears, showing her commitment to helping fight against Mayor Fisk. This moment is a great reference to their history as the Defenders, and it’s particularly exciting because the ‘Born Again’ season 3 will bring the whole team back together, including Luke Cage and Iron Fist, officially reintroducing them to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The final episode of Daredevil: Born Again begins streaming May 5th on Disney+ from Marvel Studios.
