Netflix’s 8-Part Crime Thriller Series With Solid RT Score Officially Returns With New Episodes In 2 Weeks

A popular crime thriller series is coming back to Netflix, expanding one of the platform’s most successful storylines. While many Netflix original shows are self-contained, the streaming service has increasingly created interconnected universes with multiple shows and movies. A good example of this trend is a recent animated prequel to one of Netflix’s most-loved series.

Perhaps the best example is Stranger Things, which was Netflix’s biggest show for ten years before concluding on December 31, 2025. This April, Netflix released an animated spin-off, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, filling in the gaps between seasons 2 and 3 with new adventures for the kids. Stranger Things is just one of several Netflix shows that have expanded into larger franchises with related releases. Others include The Witcher, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, Bridgerton, The Sandman, and many more.

This trend also connects with a popular genre on Netflix: crime thrillers. Many of the platform’s best thriller series feature suspenseful plots, pitting cunning criminals against detectives who are both brilliant and imperfect. One particularly successful show is among Netflix’s all-time most-watched releases, and a new series connected to it will be available soon.

The popular series Money Heist, also known as La Casa de Papel, is getting a sequel! The spinoff, Berlin, will return for a second season on May 15th. After premiering on December 29, 2023, the show is back with a new heist led by the character Berlin, and this season will be different in one major way.

Netflix’s Berlin Season 1 Expands One Of The Streamer’s Biggest Franchises

Money Heist is a hugely popular series on Netflix. The thrilling crime show ran for five seasons, from May 2017 to December 2021. Critics and viewers alike loved it, with a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 81% audience score. The series centers around a team of robbers who pull off two incredibly complex and cleverly planned bank heists.

Two years after the hit series Money Heist ended, its prequel Berlin season 1 was released. Set years before the events of Money Heist, the show centers on Berlin, a key member of the original gang. The 8-episode crime thriller follows Berlin and his crew as they attempt a daring jewel heist in Paris, France, aiming to steal €44 million worth of valuables.

As a huge fan of Money Heist, I loved seeing familiar faces pop up in the new show! It was great to get more backstory on the whole universe. They brought back Pedro Alonso as Berlin, of course, but also Itziar Ituño as Raquel and Najwa Nimri as Alicia Sierra – those two are such strong characters. Honestly, Season 2 feels like a total game-changer for the whole franchise, and I’m especially excited about another big character coming back!

Berlin Season 2 Will Change The Netflix Crime Thriller Series

Okay, so I just got the scoop on Berlin season 2, and it’s going to be interesting! Álvaro Morte is back as Sergio Marquina – you know, The Professor from Money Heist and Berlin’s brother. That’s a big shift from season one, but honestly, the biggest news is how Netflix is handling the series. They’ve decided to essentially create standalone stories within the Berlin universe. Season one was Berlin and the Jewels of Paris, and now season two is Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine. Expect another eight episodes dropping on May 15th – it looks like we’re getting a new heist each season!

Netflix now presents each installment of the show as a separate, limited series within the broader Money Heist world. This might be a little confusing for those new to the series. However, it makes sense because Season 2 features an entirely new heist: Berlin and his crew pretend to rob a painting, but their real target is those who were blackmailing Berlin – the Duke and Duchess of Málaga. Because of this fresh storyline, the new season focusing on Berlin promises to be exciting.
