The sci-fi series Battlestar Galactica, often considered one of the best of the 21st century, is currently gaining popularity on demand. FlixPatrol reports that it’s the 8th most popular show on the Apple TV Store in both the United States and Canada.
It’s a bit unexpected to see Battlestar Galactica suddenly available for purchase on demand, especially considering recent announcements. Apparently, many fans were eager to revisit this popular and highly-rated sci-fi show.
What is Battlestar Galactica About?
The 2004 reimagining of Battlestar Galactica begins with a devastating attack. The story opens with the Cylons – robots originally built to help people – launching a surprise attack on the Twelve Colonies, the last remaining home of humanity. What follows is a desperate chase as a fleet of survivors tries to escape the Cylons’ relentless pursuit.
After a devastating attack by the Cylons, the few remaining humans from the Twelve Colonies are forced to flee across space. Pursued relentlessly by the Cylons – who can now disguise themselves as people – they embark on a perilous journey to find Earth, a mythical thirteenth colony that may hold the key to their survival.
Battlestar Galactica Has Outdone Star Trek in the 21st Century
This show fundamentally changed science fiction television in the 2000s. It set a very high standard that many later sci-fi series, even massive franchises like Star Trek, have found difficult to match.
It was a fortunate coincidence that Battlestar Galactica premiered right as Star Trek: Enterprise finished airing. Enterprise‘s end marked a pause for the Star Trek TV series, lasting over ten years, until Star Trek: Discovery revived the franchise with the rise of streaming.
The success of Battlestar Galactica was partly built on the foundation laid by Star Trek. Ronald Moore, the creator of the series, drew heavily from his experience working on Deep Space Nine, particularly when reimagining Battlestar Galactica. The new series’ combination of science fiction with themes of religion and spirituality, and its willingness to portray the imperfections of even good intentions, clearly echoed elements from the story of Captain Sisko and the Dominion War in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
While recent Star Trek shows on streaming services have tried to explore similar themes, many viewers feel Battlestar Galactica did it more effectively. The first season of Star Trek: Discovery, with its serious and war-focused atmosphere, felt out of place to some fans. Similarly, Star Trek: Picard‘s portrayal of the Federation as flawed after the Dominion War didn’t resonate with everyone.
However, Battlestar Galactica managed to succeed, and that could explain its impressive 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Battlestar Galactica Is Making a Streaming Comeback
Created by Ronald D. Moore for the Syfy channel, Battlestar Galactica aired for four seasons between 2004 and 2009. The series starred Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackhoff, Jamie Bamber, James Callis, Tricia Helfer, and Grace Park.
Now that Battlestar Galactica is available for rent and purchase digitally, before coming to Paramount+ and Pluto TV, there’s a chance the show could have a successful streaming run. This early performance might show NBCUniversal that continuing the series is a good idea.
You can now buy Battlestar Galactica on various digital platforms. Plus, starting in May, you’ll be able to stream the original series, its pilot miniseries, and the spin-off movie all on Paramount+ and Pluto TV.
