Dylan Carter, former contestant on ‘The Voice,’ dies at 24

Dylan Carter, a contestant on Season 24 of “The Voice,” died in a car accident on Saturday.

A 24-year-old musician died in a car crash in Colleton County, South Carolina, according to local NBC News affiliate WCBD. The crash happened on a rural road and involved only his vehicle.

Reba McEntire, who worked with Dylan Carter on “The Voice,” shared a heartfelt message on social media Monday. She wrote that they will deeply miss him, describing him as a bright, kind, and gifted young man who always brought joy to the show. She ended with a message of rest in peace for her friend.

I was so saddened to hear about the accident, and Moncks Corner’s mayor, Thomas Hamilton Jr., shared that his whole family was heartbroken too. He posted about it on Facebook, and it just shows how much of an impact this singer had on everyone in the Lowcountry.

The post shared that he was a talented singer who often performed at local events, bringing joy to the community. It also mentioned he was a kind and charming person who will be greatly missed.

As a huge film fan, I was so saddened to hear about Dylan’s passing. It’s hard to put into words how much this news impacts everyone in Moncks Corner. The town council and all of us who work here are sending our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. He wasn’t just someone who entertained us; he was a true friend, and we’re all deeply grieving his loss.

Carter was scheduled to perform at the “Music on Main” event in Moncks Corner on Monday night, but it has been canceled. People expressed their surprise and sadness about the cancellation online.

In 2023, Carter appeared on Season 24 of “The Voice.” He performed Whitney Houston’s “I Look to You” during his blind audition, dedicating it to his mother who had passed away the previous year. All four judges were impressed and turned their chairs, with Gwen Stefani pressing her button early in the first verse.

Wow, Niall Horan said my performance was spectacular! He also explained that getting four chair turns – meaning all the judges loved it – is really hard, you have to absolutely blow everyone away to make that happen.

Reba McEntire was visibly moved and said she could feel and hear the emotion in Carter’s voice as he sang. She explained that’s a sign of a truly special song and performer – one that genuinely touches you.

Carter shared with the judges that seeing them turn their chairs around reminded him of his mother, who had passed away in October. He explained that she’d requested he sing the song at her funeral, but he was too emotional to get through it. He felt this performance was a special opportunity to honor her memory and make her proud.

Following his elimination from the competition, Carter shared his thoughts on Instagram. He wrote that things didn’t go as planned, but he was proud of his performance and gave it his best effort on stage.

Carter said he was disappointed to be eliminated, but quickly realized it wasn’t a loss at all – he actually gained a lot from the experience.

When I started my journey on The Voice, I was lost and heartbroken after losing my mom. But leaving Los Angeles, I felt completely different. I had newfound confidence in myself and a clear sense of purpose. I’d been afraid that moving forward meant forgetting my mom, but I realized it’s about carrying her memory with me as I grow. She always wanted me to be happy and find my own voice, and I finally did! I left with all of that, and I even gained an amazing community along the way.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
