James Gunn Explains Why DC”s The Authority Was Scrapped

As a big DC fan, I was really curious about what was happening with The Authority, especially since it was one of the first projects announced for the new DC Universe James Gunn and Peter Saffran are building. There was some chatter online that Gunn might even write or direct it, but he cleared things up on Threads. Apparently, when he hinted at that possibility, it was just a slip of the tongue – nothing more to it than that!

James Gunn said he never planned to write or direct ‘The Authority,’ despite the rumor circulating online, and simply didn’t have the time. He then explained all the reasons the movie was never made, even if he hadn’t been involved.

Why Didn’t DC Studios Make The Authority?

According to Gunn, the script for The Authority wasn’t fully developed and, more critically, didn’t fit well within the overall DC Universe, considering both the story and logistical challenges. However, he didn’t completely rule out the possibility of the project happening in the future, stating, ‘Maybe some day. Not soon.’

The concept of a powerful, government-backed superhero team wasn’t new. Elements of it actually showed up in Kurt Busiek’s Superman, where a team called PlanetWatch – funded by Lex Luthor and designed for planetary defense – closely mirrored StormWatch, the team that would later become the basis for The Authority.

Interestingly, The Authority didn’t actually begin as part of the main DC Universe in the comics. It was later incorporated during the 2011 Flashpoint storyline and the following “New 52” reboot of DC Comics.
