Why wasn’t Janet Jackson in Michael? Here’s the reason

LaToya Jackson recently explained why her sister, Janet Jackson, wasn’t involved in the movie Michael, a biopic about their brother Michael Jackson’s life. The film, directed by Antoine Fuqua, covers Michael’s career from his days with the Jackson 5 through his 1988 Bad tour.

Interestingly, Janet Jackson isn’t in the film. Her sister, LaToya, said Janet made the decision not to participate.

At the premiere of the film at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre, LaToya told Variety she hoped everyone involved had been able to appear in it.

LaToya explained Janet’s absence by saying she had been asked to attend but politely refused, and her decision should be respected.

The film, released in the UK on April 22nd, features Jaafar Jackson as Michael Jackson, and Colman Domingo as his father, Joe Jackson. Nia Long plays Katherine Jackson, and Jessica Sula portrays LaToya Jackson.

Variety reports that the movie removed some scenes, including a different ending and parts that hinted at more sensitive or controversial topics.

Even though critics didn’t love it, the new biopic had a hugely successful opening weekend, bringing in $97 million in the US and $217 million globally. This is the biggest opening weekend ever for a biopic, beating the previous record of $60 million held by the 2015 film Straight Outta Compton (according to Variety).

Michael is out now in cinemas.
