The Faculty Gets a Free Streaming Home in May 2026

Originally released in theaters in 1998, The Faculty has become a beloved cult classic and is now considered one of the best films of its type from that time. Now, 26 years later, fans can watch it for free at the beginning of the month.

Next month, the free streaming platform is adding a bunch of exciting titles! On May 1st, you’ll be able to watch films like The Faculty and the 2007 vampire horror 30 Days of Night, which stars Josh Hartnett (who also appears in The Faculty). Another highlight is the 1998 slasher film Urban Legend, featuring horror veterans Robert Englund, Brad Dourif, and Danielle Harris.

The Faculty Was Made With a Stellar Cast and Crew

Robert Rodriguez, known for films like From Dusk Till Dawn and Alita: Battle Angel, directed The Faculty. The screenplay was written by Kevin Williamson, who also wrote the Scream movies and recently directed Scream 7. The film was Jordana Brewster’s first major movie role, and it also stars Joshua Hartnett (Halloween H20), Clea DuVall (Better Call Saul), Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings), Famke Janssen (X-Men), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgment Day), Jon Stewart (The Daily Show), Piper Laurie (Carrie), Shawn Hatosy (Ready or Not 2: Here I Come), and singer Usher.

This movie takes place in an Ohio high school where students start to realize their teachers are acting strangely. They soon discover that the faculty is being secretly replaced by alien parasites, who plan to take over the whole school and then the world. The film has a classic feel and relies on familiar late-90s high school tropes, featuring characters like the star athlete, the brainy kid, the popular girl, the troublemaker, the loner, and the jock.

The Faculty Influenced One of This Year’s Oscar-Winning Films

The movie did very well in theaters, making over $63 million on a $15 million budget. Although reviews were mixed when it first came out – it received a 58% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – it’s since become a favorite among a dedicated group of fans. Director Ryan Coogler has said this movie greatly influenced his recent film, Sinners, which won multiple Academy Awards, including Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan.

I recently read an interview with Ryan Coogler where he was talking about what inspired his new movie, and it was so interesting! He said while From Dusk Till Dawn was an influence, he actually loves The Faculty even more. He really admires how Robert Rodriguez took a classic monster movie formula and brilliantly set it in a 1990s high school – he called it a wonderfully confusing mix of genre and setting, and I totally get what he means!

The Faculty starts streaming for free on Pluto TV on May 1, 2026.
