Truly timeless style never fades, and this Gucci blouse seems to be a perfect example.
In 1995, Tom Ford created an iconic look for Gucci when he dressed a 21-year-old Kate Moss in a blue satin shirt and velvet trousers. The outfit became one of the most talked-about fashion moments of the 1990s.
Madonna even went on to wear the same ensemble at that year’s MTV Video Music Awards.
After 31 years, the famous shirt is back! Gucci’s creative director, Demna Gvasalia, has included it in his latest collection, where it’s being sold for £1,100.
The first batch of shirts sold out rapidly, leaving many disappointed fans to search for them on resale platforms.
This highly sought-after blouse is incredibly popular – a recent sale reached £3,778, over seven times its original price of £500. Now, another chance to buy one is available for those who weren’t able to before.
It was surprising that Gvasalia, the 45-year-old former designer for Balenciaga, didn’t feature the shirt in his first Gucci show, which took place in Milan in February with a lot of excitement.
To the audience’s excitement, he asked Kate Moss, 52, to finish the show wearing a stunning black sequin dress. While it would have been memorable if she’d worn the original shirt she modeled years ago, the designer likely thought that would have suggested a lack of fresh ideas.
Honestly, Gucci doesn’t seem too concerned about the buzz. I noticed they actually shared the image of the shirt on their Instagram – reaching over 51 million people! It’s a bold move, and speaks to their brand confidence, really.
The website highlights that this item belongs to the Generation Gucci collection, which blends the brand’s classic designs with modern influences to create a cohesive look.
It’s unclear how Mr. Ford feels about the recognition, but this isn’t the first time in 22 years that the company he used to work for has mentioned him.
While leading Gucci’s creative direction for seven years, Alessandro Michele drew inspiration from Tom Ford’s past work, bringing back satin shirts worn open in a plunging V-neck with tailored trousers reminiscent of Kate Moss’s signature style.
The saying goes that patience pays off, and that’s good news for fans of a hugely popular shirt. After a long wait, it’s finally available – though it comes with a hefty price.
