Princess Diaries 3 gets disappointing update as Anne Hathaway explains long delay

Next week, Anne Hathaway returns to her iconic role as Andy Sachs in the long-awaited sequel, The Devil Wears Prada 2. After twenty years, fans are finally getting a return visit to the world of Runway magazine.

However, many fans are hoping the actress will reprise her famous role as Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries.

Anne Hathaway first appeared as Mia in the 2001 film The Princess Diaries, and reprised the role in the 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

I was so excited when I first heard about a potential third movie way back in 2016! But it felt like forever before things really started happening. Finally, in 2024, Anne Hathaway officially signed on, and they found a fantastic director, Adele Lim – that’s when I knew it was really going to happen!

But since then, updates have been few and far between.

What to Read Next

While doing publicity for The Devil Wears Prada 2, Anne Hathaway talked to Entertainment Weekly and revealed both positive and negative updates.

Hathaway confirmed that work on the film is ongoing, stating, “We are definitely still developing it.”

Hathaway explained that the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada came together quickly and demanded all of her attention, making it impossible to work on anything else simultaneously.

So, the actress was saying that Princess Diaries 3 is definitely the next goal. She thinks everyone’s been asking for it as much as we have, and she and the writers are actually working on the script right now, slowly but surely!

Despite Lim joining the project in 2024, the actress unfortunately clarified that a third movie hasn’t been officially approved or confirmed yet.

Anne Hathaway’s co-star in The Devil Wears Prada 2, Meryl Streep, shared her thoughts, saying that the biggest lesson from the movie was the importance of exceeding expectations. If you’re going to take something on, you need to do it exceptionally well.

“You’ve got to wait for the right script.”

Meryl Streep’s recent statements align with those of director David Frankel, who, at the European premiere of the film, explained the twenty-year delay in creating a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada.

Frankel admitted that for nearly twenty years, they simply hadn’t come up with a strong enough concept. They wouldn’t even consider approaching someone like Meryl Streep with a weak idea – and honestly, who would?

Frankel shared that screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna noticed significant changes in both the fashion and journalism industries since 2005. This led her to wonder how beloved characters from the past would cope with today’s more difficult environment, which she found a compelling idea to explore.

It’s a little strange to be here, but I’m happy we waited to do this,” Frankel said. “Reconnecting with everyone who worked on the movie, both the actors and the crew, has been truly wonderful.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is released in cinemas on 1 May.
