CBS Is Officially Reviving Gibbs’ Canceled NCIS Story

In the NCIS: Origins prequel series, the potential romance between Special Agents Lala Dominguez (Mariel Molino) and Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Austin Stowell) seemed stalled. However, things change in Season 2, Episode 16, “Who’s Gonna Drive You Home?” when Gibbs and his wife, Diane (Kathleen Kenny), separate. This series is a spin-off of the original NCIS, which first aired in 2003.

Mark Harmon played Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the original NCIS series, and the character’s complicated love life was central to his story. It appears CBS has decided against any further romantic storyline between him and Lala in the prequel series. However, the spinoff revisits Gibbs’ second marriage in Episode 16, revealing that while Leroy and his wife stayed legally married for several years, their relationship had already fallen apart emotionally.

Lala recently went through a breakup because her boyfriend had to enter witness protection. This opens up possibilities for a romantic connection between Lala and Gibbs, something the show has been building towards, especially in Season 2, with subtle hints and suggestions from other characters.

The biggest dramatic moment happened when Gibbs discovered Lala swimming at a neighbor’s house, and they nearly kissed. However, the moment was interrupted when Leroy confessed to Hernandez’s murder. This led Lala to leave and try to sort things out, culminating in a serious car accident at the end of the episode.

The show’s renewal offers a potential opportunity for Gibbs and Lala to develop a romantic connection, but even if they do connect in the past, a lasting relationship seems unlikely anytime soon.

When Gibbs’ father, Jackson, returns the box of rules Gibbs had previously saved – after Leroy threw them away – it creates tension. Gibbs does confide in Lala about the rules, and Harmon’s recollections suggest they hold deeper meaning.

Interestingly, older Gibbs seems to be developing feelings for Lala, and the story’s narration has often suggested that Lala is a special person for him. However, it’s unclear if these agents will ever get the chance to explore a relationship, or if anything romantic will come of it.
