Idris Elba surprises locals as Luther swaps inner-ciy London for the Suffolk seaside in new Netflix film

Okay, so, seriously, everyone talks about Idris Elba as DCI John Luther, and it’s SO deserved. He just owns that role, stomping around those dark, messed-up streets of London. It’s not just a cop show, it’s… it’s Luther dealing with all that grittiness, and it’s completely captivating. He’s just perfect in it, honestly.

The detective known for his serious demeanor will return in a new full-length movie, this time solving crimes in the surprising location of Southwold, a stylish coastal town in Suffolk.

The town, known for its picturesque beauty and brightly colored beach huts, feels like a surprising setting for Luther’s intense and complex stories.

People in Southwold were surprised to see 53-year-old Idris Elba filming scenes for a new Netflix movie on the town’s 623-foot pier this week.

I’m so excited for this movie! It’s about a detective who messed up badly and lost everything, but then gets pulled back in for a really tough case – a string of awful, random murders happening all over London. It sounds intense!

Netflix hasn’t explained how the story moves from London to Southwold, a location that feels more fitting for a classic Agatha Christie mystery.

This new installment continues the story from 2023’s Luther: The Fallen Sun. In that film, Idris Elba’s character, Luther, lost his job with the police and was imprisoned, only to escape and pursue the wealthy serial killer David Robey, played by Andy Serkis.

Ruth Wilson, 44, will return as Alice Morgan in the next installment. Her character is a complex and dangerous killer who shares a romantic connection with Luther.

The character appeared to die at the end of the fifth season of the BBC show, falling from scaffolding while fighting with the detective.

Despite extensive searches, her remains were never discovered, leaving the possibility she might still be alive. The new movie will feature Dermot Crowley as the clever detective superintendent, Martin Schenk.

The 79-year-old appeared in all five series of the show as well as the first Netflix film.

Known for playing Robert Baratheon in Game of Thrones, Anya Chalotra, age 30, became popular for her role as the sorceress Yennefer in the Netflix fantasy series The Witcher.

While filming on the pier, Idris Elba traded in Luther’s usual tweed coat and tie for a more relaxed look – a green parka and a dark sweatshirt.

The actor, recently knighted, was spotted comforting the character played by Ms. Chalotra, who was dressed in a bright orange coat and jeans.

Filming for the movie, which has not yet been given a title, began in London earlier this year.

It is expected to stream on Netflix in early 2027.
