Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Is Telling The Same Sith Story For The Third Time

The newest Star Wars story feels repetitive, focusing again on the Sith. While the Sith are a fascinating part of the Star Wars universe – intriguing because of their connection to the dark side, their unusual use of the Force, and their endless hunger for power – this latest tale doesn’t offer much new. Characters like Darth Sidious, Darth Vader, and Kylo Ren all represent these dark side traits, but many fans find Darth Maul to be the most captivating Sith character of them all.

Darth Maul has become a major, intimidating figure in the Star Wars universe ever since he seemingly died in Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace. Unlike many villains, he isn’t driven by a desire for galactic domination. Instead, he’s fueled by a relentless need for revenge and a deep-seated hatred, primarily focused on stopping his former master, Darth Sidious, from taking control.

Darth Maul keeps reappearing in the animated Star Wars universe – in The Clone Wars, Rebels, and now Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord – to cause trouble for his rivals and expand his criminal organization, eventually becoming a real challenge to the Emperor. He’s been searching for a suitable apprentice ever since his brother died during the Clone Wars. However, a clear pattern has emerged: while his stories are always interesting, they tend to repeat the same themes across each animated series.

Maul’s Arc In Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Is Too Similar To Other Star Wars Stories

I’m really enjoying the Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord comic! It’s set as the Empire is getting stronger, and it follows Maul as he tries to rebuild his criminal empire on the planet Janix. He’s still furious about losing on Mandalore, so he teams up with some Death Watch soldiers and other criminals to take over Janix’s entire underworld. What’s cool is he’s not just hiding – he’s openly messing with the local police while he does it!

You might recognize this pattern. It’s quite similar to what Maul did towards the end of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, where he gathered a powerful criminal network including groups like Death Watch, Black Sun, the Pykes, and even the Hutts. However, things are different now. Instead of the Jedi maintaining order, the Empire is the main obstacle, particularly after they arrived on Janix in season 1, episode 4 of Shadow Lord, titled “Chapter 4: Pride and Vengeance.”

Okay, so picking up where we left off with Maul in Shadow Lord, a big part of his arc revolves around him desperately trying to find someone to take under his wing. After failing to sway Ahsoka Tano – remember his attempt in the final episodes of The Clone Wars? – he’s still searching for a powerful Force-user he can shape to his will. And that’s where Devon Izara comes in. She’s a young Jedi Padawan, a survivor of Order 66, and she’s been laying low on the planet Janix with her Master, Eeko-Dio Daki. It’s a compelling setup, and I’m really curious to see how this potential master-apprentice relationship unfolds.

Maul is carefully influencing Devon, gradually changing how she sees the Jedi and their place in the galaxy since the Empire took power. This relationship, and Maul’s wish to train her, strongly echoes his connection with Ezra Bridger in Star Wars Rebels. Like with Ezra, Maul is trying to convince Devon to turn to the dark side. Though Ezra ultimately resisted, he wrestled with dark side temptations during their time together in Rebels, questioning the Jedi way in a galaxy filled with hatred and fear.

So Far, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Hasn’t Revealed Anything New About Maul

While the first season of Shadow Lord isn’t over yet – and a second season is already planned – the show hasn’t offered much new information about Maul’s character after six episodes. A major issue is that the story often focuses on other characters, like Devon and Detective Lawson, pushing Maul to the sidelines. He was barely in episodes five and six, which feels like a problem when it’s supposed to be his show. Of course, a lot can still change before the season ends.

It makes sense that the show is focusing on Devon, and she might be what ultimately makes it successful. As one fan theory suggests, if Devon becomes Maul’s apprentice – potentially becoming a new version of the Darth Talon character from older Star Wars stories – it would reveal a different side of Maul. He easily controlled his brother, but the question is whether he’ll be able to manipulate Devon in the same way, or if he’ll need a different approach. Devon’s storyline is currently open-ended, which is exciting, but the show needs to avoid repeating old plot points to truly capitalize on its potential.

Ideally, the Shadow Lord series will explore the character’s backstory and internal struggles, similar to how The Clone Wars revitalized Maul. We could learn about the beginning of his training with Sidious, how he came to be on Janix, and what happened to the Darksaber after the Clone Wars. It would be fascinating to see how his connection to the dark side compares to other Sith Lords, and whether he still feels sadness over his brother. There’s a lot of untapped potential in his story within the Star Wars universe.

Despite its flaws, Shadow Lord is a welcome addition to the Star Wars universe. The animation is stunning, Darth Maul remains a menacing villain, and the story captures the same gritty Imperial feel as Andor. Maul is a fascinating character, so it would be a missed opportunity to simply retell familiar Star Wars stories in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord.

New episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord premiere on Mondays, exclusively on Disney+.
