Netflix’s Comedy Hit Series Running Point Is Officially the No. 1 Show in America

The comedy series starring Kate Hudson and Justin Theroux has become a big success on streaming platforms. It first came out in 2025 and recently released a new season.

The first season of Running Point was incredibly popular, and the show, which premiered on April 23rd, quickly became another success. According to FlixPatrol, Running Point is now the most-watched series on Netflix in the United States.

Globally, Running Point is currently second most popular, trailing just behind another title that has been incredibly successful since its release on April 21st. Despite this, Running Point still reached the top spot in 10 countries worldwide, including the United States, Slovenia, Croatia, and Bulgaria.

What Happens in Running Point Season 2?

Inspired by the real history of the Los Angeles Lakers, Running Point was created by Mindy Kaling, known for The Office. She worked alongside Jeanie Buss, the Lakers’ owner and president, as a co-executive producer. The show draws from Buss’s experience taking over leadership of the team after her father passed away in 2013.

In Running Point, Isla Fisher unexpectedly becomes president of the Los Angeles Waves basketball team when her brother enters rehab. Formerly known as a party girl, Isla now wants to prove herself in the male-dominated world of professional sports and lead the Waves to victory.

Although the LA Waves played their hardest, they didn’t win the championship in Season 1. Following the season, their coach, Jay Brown, moved to Boston after sharing a kiss with Isla. The season concluded with Isla’s brother, Cam Gordon, returning home after completing his rehabilitation program.

Honestly, it’s frustrating to watch. He keeps saying he’s not interested in leading again, but his actions speak volumes – he’s constantly trying to push Isla to quit the team, and he’s still battling personal issues. Meanwhile, poor Isla is dealing with a new coach and trying to plan her wedding, all while sorting out her feelings for Jay. It’s a lot for her to handle, and it’s clear he’s not making it any easier.

Okay, so the new season really leaned into what worked before, bringing back Kate Hudson – remember her Oscar buzz for ‘Song Sung Blue’? She’s fantastic as Isla Gordon. And I was thrilled to see Justin Theroux get a bigger role, now a series regular as Cam Gordon. The ensemble cast is still strong, featuring Drew Tarver as Sandy Gordon, Scott MacArthur as Ness Gordon, Brenda Song as Ali Lee, Fabrizio Guido as Jackie Gordon, Chet Hanks as Travis Bugg, Toby Sandeman as Marcus Winfield, Max Greenfield as Lev Levenson, and Jay Ellis as Jay Brown – they all really bring something special to the show.

Running Point Season 2 Received Stellar Reviews

The first season of the show was a hit with both critics and viewers, earning a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 79% from critics and 81% from audiences. The second season was even better, achieving an 88% approval score. Although this score is based on a limited number of reviews (currently eight), it’s very promising, and combined with the show’s popularity on streaming platforms, suggests a third season is likely.

An audience score isn’t available yet, but initial reactions to the show are positive. One reviewer said the second season is a significant improvement over the first, with more developed characters, realistic family interactions, and sharper, funnier writing. They also praised the performances of both the lead actors and the supporting cast.
