It’s frustrating when a great show has a bad ending. After investing time and becoming captivated by a story, a disappointing finale can completely ruin the entire experience.
A lot of anime manage to end on a high note, wrapping up storylines neatly. But just as many are remembered for their disappointing finales – endings that feel rushed, don’t make sense, or simply aren’t satisfying. It’s frustrating when a show that seemed perfect throughout falters right at the very end.
Wonder Egg Priority Didn’t Live up to Its Promising Beginning
When Wonder Egg Priority first came out in 2021, it quickly stood out as something special and potentially a future classic. This original anime series appeared unexpectedly and immediately drew viewers in with its beautiful animation, complex characters, and a captivating story. It took the familiar ‘magical girl’ concept and turned it into a surprisingly dark and thoughtful exploration of its characters.
Unfortunately, Wonder Egg Priority didn’t quite deliver on its initial promise, especially towards the end. The animation and storytelling both suffered as the series concluded, feeling rushed and disorganized. This weakened the emotional impact of the characters’ journeys and left many of the show’s earlier themes unresolved.
The Lackluster Ending of Erased Made the Entire Series Feel Meaningless
The anime Erased started as a hugely popular and gripping sci-fi mystery. It expertly crafted a suspenseful murder mystery with a lot of emotional weight, but unfortunately, the ending – and specifically, the reveal of who committed the crime – was a major letdown.
From the start, Gaku Yashiro seemed like the most likely culprit, and the scene where Satoru confronted him felt hurried and didn’t build much suspense. Many viewers were also disappointed with how Satoru’s story ended, not just because he didn’t get together with Kayo. While the finale of Erased wasn’t a complete failure, it ultimately didn’t satisfy most fans.
Mahoromatic’s Ending Leaves Behind More Questions Than Answers
Studio Gainax, the animation studio behind popular shows like Evangelion and Gurren Lagann, is well-known for its often-abrupt and confusing finales. While some fans have come to expect—and even appreciate—these unexpected endings (sometimes called a “Gainax ending”), series like Mahoromatic demonstrate how suddenly changing course at the end can be a poor storytelling decision.
Mahoromatic is a charming romantic comedy with an unexpected dark side. The story begins with Mahoro, an android maid, learning she only has a little over a year to live. It initially seems like a dramatic sacrifice will end her story, but the show then jumps forward twenty years. In a surprising and disheartening twist, Suguru, Mahoro’s love interest, appears to die as well. While their ultimate fates remain unclear, this sudden turn of events left many viewers feeling disappointed.
Darling in the Franxx Tried to Do Too Much With Its Final Act
Like the studio Gainax before it, Studio Trigger frequently takes risks with how its shows end, and sometimes those endings damage the show’s overall reception. A prime example is Darling in the Franxx, which was incredibly popular when it first came out and captivated many anime fans, but ultimately lost much of its audience due to a divisive finale.
The ending of Darling in the Franxx takes a surprising turn, but it feels rushed and illogical. The plot throws twists at viewers without much explanation, and the story loses sight of its characters’ emotional journeys. Even worse, Hiro and Zero Two’s deaths feel pointless, and the introduction of their reincarnated selves in the epilogue doesn’t offer much closure or satisfaction.
Dandelion Needed More Time to Make the Ending Land
Based on the work of Hideaki Sorachi, Dandelion is a 7-episode series that builds on the original story. This fast-paced comedy follows the chaotic angels who deal with troublesome souls, and it captures Sorachi’s signature comedic style.
The show works well when focusing on its core elements, but it runs into trouble trying to add big action sequences and dramatic moments at the end. While Dandelion aims for a powerful, emotional finale where supporting characters help the heroes win, the story doesn’t give the characters enough time to develop. As a result, the final episode lacks the emotional punch it was aiming for and feels somewhat disappointing.
Soul Eater Suffered From Going the Anime Original Ending Route
Older anime adaptations, especially those based on unfinished manga, sometimes try to create their own endings to provide viewers with a complete story. However, this often doesn’t work well, and the disappointing finale of Soul Eater is a well-known example of this.
This anime was hugely popular in the late 2000s, known for its original story, interesting magic system, cool fight scenes, and well-developed characters. Unfortunately, the ending, which wasn’t part of the original manga, felt rushed and didn’t quite live up to the rest of the series. The final battle culminates in the hero, Maka, defeating the villain with a somewhat cheesy ‘power of friendship’ attack, and everything wraps up a little too neatly and optimistically.
Kuma Miko: Girl Meets Bear’s Ending Disappointed Even the Author
The anime series Kuma Miko: Girl Meets Bear unfortunately ended before it could finish telling its story. Because it’s a lighthearted and easygoing comedy, you’d think it would have been easy to create a pleasant ending. However, Kuma Miko actually delivered a very unsatisfying conclusion to its viewers.
After eleven episodes of development and striving for her goals, Machi is suddenly forced to act like a child and gives up on her dream of moving to the city. This bleak and upsetting ending disappointed even the manga’s creator, Masume Yoshimoto, who later provided an alternate, much happier conclusion for the story.
Fena: Pirate Princess Turns Into a Sinking Ship
Studio Production I.G’s anime series, Fena: Pirate Princess, begins with a lot of potential. The story blends action, adventure, personal drama, and romance in a way that feels intricate, and the show seems well-made from the start.
Despite its promising start, the twelve episodes of Fena: Pirate Princess weren’t enough to fully tell its complex story. The ending rushes through several unexpected plot twists and dramatic moments without giving them the development they deserve. Instead of a thrilling conclusion, the finale feels incomplete and doesn’t quite deliver on the excitement built up throughout the series.
Platinum End’s Nihilistic Finale Renders the Journey Pointless
Platinum End is a unique battle royale anime where thirteen candidates with angelic abilities compete to become the new God. While the series started with a dark and interesting premise, the ending was a letdown for many viewers. It felt rushed, overly pessimistic, and ultimately made the entire experience feel pointless.
When Shuji Nakaumi ascends to godhood, he immediately ends his own life, causing the complete destruction of the universe. This makes all the characters’ journeys feel pointless. While other shows have successfully created impactful apocalyptic endings, Platinum End‘s attempt felt unsatisfying and lacked the emotional weight it aimed for.
The Promised Neverland’s Downfall Lasted an Entire Season
Everyone agrees the first season was fantastic, so viewers were eager to see where the story would go. Expectations were particularly high because manga fans promised the series improves and has a great ending.
Despite the initial promise of the first season, The Promised Neverland Season 2 is widely considered one of the worst anime sequels ever made. It didn’t deliver a satisfying conclusion, turning a potentially powerful finale into a rushed and disappointing montage. The season also suffered from significant problems beforehand, skipping important story arcs and speeding through the plot in a way that made the narrative feel disjointed and confusing.
